In addition to the above list of appropriations and statistics, we submit the following remarks. In taking the valuation through- out the town in the somewhat limited time allotted to us would to the ordinary observer perhaps appear to be an easy task, but in many instances we find it rather a difficult one, especially in that portion of the town called the South Meadow Cedar Swamp, a large portion of which the owners are unknown. The lines and boundaries are very obscure, and consequently would require a very large additional expense to survey and locate correctly. Although there is a slight increase in the amount of valuation as taken by us the past year as compared with 1893, the appropriations were very much larger, consequently we were obliged to increase the rate per thousand from $10 in 1893 to $11.50 in 1894.
In conclusion, we will say, whatever errors we have com- mitted have been made without prejudice or favoritism.

REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
To the Citizens of Carver: - The following report of your School Committee for the year ending March 1, 1895, is respect- fully submitted : -
We are glad to be able to report that our schools, throughout the town, have been in a good condition during the year. We commenced the year with the same teachers with whom we closed the preceding year. Some of them had already taught successfully for a number of years in the various schools in town. They have received honorable mention so many times for their faithful work that repetition seems unnecessary.
The changes which have been made during the year have been made by voluntary resignations. Miss Lillian W. Dove, after having taught the No. I grammar school four years in succession, and Miss Mary L. Harrub, after having taught the No. I primary one year, resigned at the close of their respective summer terms ; and Miss Sadie F. Atwood, after having taught three successive years in district No. 3, and eight successive years in all in this town, resigned at the close of the spring term.
We were fortunate in being able to secure the services of Mr. Elmer B. Perkins to fill the vacancy in the No. I grammar, and of Miss Leila B. Thomas, for the No. I primary. Both of these teachers had done excellent work in other schools in town. The vacancy in No. 3 was filled by Miss Mary E. Flynn, a graduate of the Bridgewater normal school. This was Miss Flynn's first experience in teaching. She came to us highly recommended, and seems to be gaining a good record.
Our teachers have all been faithful and conscientious, showing great interest in their work, striving for the best in every way, the result of which has been thoroughness, and a good degree of progress in the several schools.
32
The usual studies have been pursued in each school, and no change has been made in the text-books. Your Committee have, however, continued to provide from time to time something new. interesting, and instructive to alternate with the regular reading books. The improved methods of teaching are now employed to some extent in all our schools. Some of our teachers have been prepared for their work in normal and training schools, while others, by careful study and observation, keep themselves acquainted with the improvements made from year to year. com- bining the knowledge thus gained with their own experience.
Our schools have continued thirty-four weeks throughout the town, with the exception of the East Head school. which has had but seventeen weeks. The schools commenced so late last spring that we had a short summer term, in order to make out the thirty-four weeks planned for the year. but the experiment did not prove successful enough to repeat.
We must continue to mention the pressing need of a more suitable room for the primary school in district No. 4. We recommend an enlargement of the schoolhouse to meet the needs of this school, and an appropriation to cover the expense.
The average attendance of our pupils during the year has been unfavorably affected by the summer term and by the severe weather in February. Although sickness and other causes sometimes make it necessary for children to be out of school, yet a large part of the absences could be avoided. We wish we could say something this year that has not already been said many times over, to the parents of the children who are out of school so much. - something that would arouse their pride and ambition to such an extent as to cause them to make a greater effort to overcome all obstacles, in order that their children may receive their share of the advantages of the public schools.
