In Memoriam
ELLIS DEXTER ATWOOD
1889 - 1950
The accident to Ellis Atwood on November 26 at his office building which resulted in his untimely death four days later came as a shock to the entire town of Carver, and particularly to the town officers, past and present, with whom he had so often served- on the Board of Selectmen, School Committee, Finance Committee and in other capacities.
He was born on June 16, 1889 at the old Island Farm, South Carver and with the exception of periods for schooling and a

tour of military duty during World War 1, was away but short periods from this town which he loved and in which he spent his entire life. The cranberry property which came to him from his father, Stephen Dexter Atwood, he expanded through construction and purchase into the largest such property con- trolled by a single owner. His knowledge of cranberries and pronounced business ability, caused his council and services to be sought throughout the industry and he held offices in all of the leading cranberry organizations. His screen house, the living quarters for the personnel of his plantation and the landscaping surrounding the layout, creates a model not equaled anywhere in the industry.
When the last of the 24 inch narrow gauge railroads in Maine were being abandoned, Ellis, for years keenly interested in railroading, purchased most of the rolling stock of these roads and trucked the equipment to Carver, where it was completely renovated. The rail system which he constructed over his bog property became one of the outstanding attrac- tions of eastern Massachusetts, and people from all parts of the nation came to ride in the diminutive coaches, and what was originally started more as a hobby he developed into a paying proposition.
Ellis Atwood truly enjoyed people and he got a great "kick" out of the great throngs coming annually to view his beautiful Christmas displays that were later transferred to the railroad property and combined with it during the Holiday Season.
He was genial and kindly always and few indeed are those who ever saw him angered. Deeply sympathetic to the mis- fortune of others, he was ever ready with a helping hand. His philanthropies which were many and varied were never ad- vertised so were seldom known except to the recipients.
Ellis, as Carver's outstanding and most respected citizen, we salute you.
