JESSE ALLEN HOLMES 1885 - 1951
Jesse Allen Holmes was born December 30, 1885, the only son of Philander J. and Ellen F. (Bent) Holmes, in the old family home in Quitticas ( West Carver). As a boy he attended school at the little red school house at Pope's Point and later at the Center.
While his father conducted a cooper-shop and a saw
mill run by water power near by his home, making nail kegs and barrels for the shipping of cranberries, young Jesse received there a business training that proved of great value to himself and the community in later years, for at an early age he took over the management of his father's business. His career in the wooden package line saw the great transition of the packaging of cranberries over the years from the barrel to the half barrel box, then to the quarter barrel and eighth barrel boxes, all of which now are mainly superseded by the cellophane and paper win- dow box.
The expansion of the wooden box business soon caused the removal from the old mill at Quitticas to a modern box factory at the Center, which then became one of the leading industries of the town and more recently incorporated as Jesse A. Holmes and Son. This industry afforded a good market for the local woodland products of box logs and the possession of many choice timber tracts.
Endowed with a keen insight, an honesty of purpose, a devotee of progress, a lover of Nature, steadfast to duty, a believer in God, trusting in his Saviour; his opinions and counsel were called upon in many capacities.
He served for many years as a director of the Middle- borough Co-operative Bank, also of the Plymouth Five Cents Savings Bank and the New England Cranberry Sales Company.
But it was to his native Town of Carver that he gave the full measure of devotion in public service. "For the good of Carver" was his creed. With sincerity of purpose he accordingly served the Town for several years as Chairman of the Finance Committee and for the past nine years as Selectman, which office he conducted with the dignity and honor to the Town so that a grateful people returned him to the office several times. In fact he carried the burdens of his office upon his sick bed and his best wishes and hopes for Carver to the grave.
His patriotism and reverence for the past led him to become a charter member of the Captain William S. McFarlin Sons of Veterans Camp No. 132 in 1907, of which he later became Past Commander. His father, Philander J. Holmes, was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the Navy. Jesse was always on hand to join the Memorial Day parade, to introduce the orator of the day and marching to the cemetery, lend a willing hand in the decoration of the graves of the old soldiers.
And again his leadership and humanity were evidenced in his life long interest in Carver's Old Home Day observ- ance, that one day in the year, which for the past fifty years has been given over to the one purpose of good fellowship among the assembled townspeople, former residents and friends. It is with deep regret that we record here of his confinement in the hospital at the time of the celebration of the fiftieth observance of Old Home Day on August 4, 1951. As President of the Carver Old Home Day Association for many years, he saw to it that the utmost was done to give everyone a good time. The continued success of the "Day" through the trying times of World War II bears evidence of this to his credit.
He was a regular attendant and benefactor of the Carver Baptist Church, together with his family.
But it was his home life that meant most to him. He married Blanche E. Vinal in December, 1907, and lived near by to his birthplace all his life, a devoted husband and father of two sons, Norman V. and Donald, and a daughter Laura, who survive him.
His hobbies included the love of the great out-doors, motoring, clam-digging at the seashore, amateur photog- raphy, as well as a good cigar; in short a man's man as this life goes.
He passed to the great beyond on October 19, 1951.
A FELLOW TOWNSMAN.
