The figures above submitted cover the transactions for the year ending Feb. 1, 1880.

While $1,000 was voted to reduce the indebtedness of the town, and there was actually $850 paid out on it, it will be noticed the amount now owed by the town is only some $200 less than reported the past year. We can account for this by the fact that the entire insurance on the town house of $20,000 expired, and had to be renewed, as well as one policy on each the North and Centre school-houses and almshouse, entailing an expense for in- surance, which is nearly all for five years, of $306.25.

We have also taken the responsibility of employing detective in the service of the town to the amount of nearly $200. Other unusual expenses will be found in items as shown.

GUIDE-BOARDS.

New guide-boards have been put up, or old ones repaired, where necessary, in all places where it has been usual to maintain them.

Respectfully submitted,

A. B. PARKER,

G. W. KINGBSURY, Selectmen of Medfield.

REPORT OF THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.

We respectfully present the following report of the condition of this department : -

We have labored under great disadvantages during the past year. We have been obliged to buy two horses, a harness, mow- ing-machine, and some new stoves. This has made the expenses greater than in some previous years.

We felt it our duty to discharge the keeper of the almshouse, as he did not do the work to our satisfaction, and some of it he did not do at all.

The crops have not proved as good as they would, had they been taken care of properly. The corn crop was the poorest that has been raised on the place for a number of years, owing, in a great measure, to its not having been manured properly, and not having the care that it should have had. The crop of mangels was only about three tons, where there ought to have been eight or nine tons. The crop of potatoes was very good.

The number of tramps has decreased more than one-half since our last report.

REPORT OF CEMETERY COMMITTEE.

Balance, Feb. 1, 1879, of appropriation unexpended. . $110.02 Expended to date therefrom, . 69.50 Received from former committee, cash, 23.10

The new part has been laid out into thirty six lots, two of which have been sold. The appraisal put upon them has been placed at twenty dollars per lot.

Trees have been set out along the front, and a hedge set out on the lower end, which it is hoped will be an improvement.

There is still land left not laid out.

A book of record has been procured, in which is a plot of the lots in the new part, on which the owners' names can be put as fast as lots are sold. There is also room for recording deeds or such other matters as may pertain to the cemetery, either the old or new parts.

Respectfully submitted,

A. B. PARKER, - GEO. W. KINGSBURY, Committee. WM. F. GUILD, -

REPORT OF ENGINEERS.

TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :

Gentlemen,- We beg leave to report our department in good and effective condition.

Both the Engine and Hook and Ladder Companies are well officered, well organized, and composed of men ready and willing to respond to every call of duty ; to do all in their power in extinguishing fires.

The apparatus is all in good working condition, and well cared for.

The two extinguishers provided for the truck the past year have proved an addition well worth the cost.

We have nine hundred feet of hose, eight hundred of which are linen and good.

We recommend the purchase of three hundred feet more of new this year, which will add very much to our power for good,- either as one long line where water is distant, or for a double stream when such is practicable.

April 11, 8 P.M., hay-stack on Main Street belonging to S. R. Maker. Cause, pro-incendiary ; damage, $10.

April 18, I A.M., barn of G. M. Smith, Main and Pleasant Streets. Cause unknown ; barn consumed, and ell to house slightly damaged. Great credit is due the companies for their promptness and efficiency in saving the house and adjoining houses. In this they were greatly aided by the prompt and effi- cient assistance rendered by Mr. D. D. Curtis in starting and run- ning their steam-pump, thereby giving a constant and powerful stream of water upon the fire until all danger to the surrounding buildings was past.
