REPORT OF ENGINEER.

TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :

Gents,- I beg leave to report our Fire Department in good and effective condition.

The Engine and Hook and Ladder Companies are well officered, well organized, and composed of men ready and willing to respond to every call of duty.

The apparatus is all in good condition and well cared for.

I would recommend that the invalid corps be conveyed to and from all fires in hacks ; that they be furnished with reclining-chairs for their comfort, and speaking-trumpets, that they may whisper their orders ; and kid gloves, because it would soil and blister their hands to assist in a laborious capacity ; that they be supplied with liver pads, that they may not become calloused by long sitting in stores in discussing and berating the companies who spend their time and labor to save their property.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.

In making our annual report of this institution, we are glad to inform the public of its acceptable condition, that its patronage is fully sustained, and that the popular taste seems to demand books of a higher standard than formerly. Yet we fear our Library is not accomplishing all it might or ought. It should be thoroughly understood that the Trustees are not wholly responsible for its success or failure, but that it depends largely upon its patrons and the public interest manifest. No one is debarred from acting in any way that shall be for the welfare- of the Library, and we shall gladly welcome any co-operation.

With all our various clubs and organizations, why not a Library Club to promote union of effort and secure success,-lectures on books, how to read, and what to read, etc .? Why cannot our Library be more intimately connected with our public schools and become an important auxiliary, the advanced classes re- quired to read some standard work each term, and give a review of the same before the school? The advantage of such a custom must be apparent to all.

Any one wishing a book not already in the Library can give the title to the librarian, and may hope to find it on the shelves, pro- vided it is a suitable book for the place and funds are sufficient. No book is expected to be added to the Library without being examined by a proper committee.

To meet a public demand, and secure the best interests of all concerned, it is important we keep our Library open to the public more hours, and, if possible, that there be a few hours at least, once or twice a week, when it is open as a reading-room. There is no estimating the good that might come from such an arrange- ment. How are these demands to be met? What it needs is a more generous pecuniary support. Without it, your Trustees are powerless to meet these demands, or make the Library what it might and should be.

Respectfully submitted for the Trustees,

J. H. RICHARDSON.
