REPORT OF ENGINEERS.
TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :
Gentlemen,- We beg leave to report our department in good condition.
The Engine and Hook and Ladder Companies are well officered, well organized, and ready to respond to every call of duty. We have one thousand feet of linen hose, eight hundred of which are good.
We recommend the purchase of three hundred feet more of new this year, which will add very much to our power for good, -- either as one long line where water is distant, or for a double stream when such is practicable.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.
It is our sad duty this year as last to report the death of another member of the Board of Trustees. In the death of Isaac Fiske, the Library has lost a faithful friend. He has been an active member of the Board since its organization, and his associates deeply feel their loss.
The Library we believe to be in a prosperous condition and satisfactorily meeting a want that can in no other way be filled. The books are apparently better used than during the first years of its existence, and the number of books issued on the increase. One of the marked improvements - and it is a very satisfactory one -is the greater demand on the part of the younger readers for history, books of travel, and a higher grade in works of fiction than in previous years. More shelf room will be demanded this year to prevent injury to books from overcrowding, and make room for new ones, which can be done at small expense. A sum- mary of the financial condition as found on the books of our late Treasurer is as follows : -

ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
SCHOOL COMMITTEE OF THE TOWN OF MEDFIELD
For the Year 1882-83.
Your Committee beg leave to submit the following report. We have been deprived of the services of Mr. W. S. Tilden since the commencement of the fall term, by his absence from town. His continued absence led him to resign his position early in the winter term, the vacancy by the concurrence of the Selectmen and School Committee remaining open until the town should fill it at the March meeting. Mr. Tilden had become the most active member on the Committee. Entering into the management of the schools with his usual energy and zeal, he was able to accomplish much good, and was a great loss to the board.
SCHOOL-HOUSES.
The North School-house has been new-shingled, a new stove put in the ante-room, and is in good order.
The South Building has required very little outlay, but will soon need a new set of curtains and a new stove, the present one hav- ing become cracked on the bottom, so that it may be unsafe.
The Centre House is in good order, needing only the usual minor repairs. The removal of the partition by vote of the town last year made a nice room for the Intermediate School. Your Committee tried faithfully and long, earnestly seconded by the teachers, to run the two schools in this room : but, after months of trial, it was found to be so great a detriment to both schools, that another room was hired of Mr. Barney, and the Primary School with its furniture moved thereto. The improvement in both schools since the separation fully justify the Committee in this action.
