TO THE HONORABLE BOARD OF SELECTMEN : -
In closing our report, we beg leave to suggest that in our opin- ion the present quarters for the storage of the fire apparatus is decidedly bad as regards the preservation of much of the property stored there. The rooms are very damp, and should be opened frequently when the weather is favorable. As it would not be policy to leave the rooms open without a guard, we recommend iron grate doors placed at both of these rooms. The roll-call of your firemen is comprised of the first-class citizens of this good old town. Give them reasonable facilities.
L. H. TURNER, J. W. SHUMWAY, Engineers. GEORGE A. MORSE,
PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The Library is, in our opinion, in a prosperous condition, and fairly meeting the purpose for which it was established. Early in the present year, more shelf room was necessary. The needed space was obtained at small cost, and in a manner which improved the appearance of the room. Before long, yet more space will be necessary ; and, at a day not distant, an additional room will be needed to accommodate the growing family of books. When this room shall have been secured, it will then be possible, and in our judgment advisable, to open a reading-room in the new quarters. The only considerable item of additional expense would be in the purchase of periodical literature.
Few towns, even though considerably larger than Medfield, have as good a library as we; but many with an inferior collec- tion of books possess an attractive reading-room, affording pleas- ant and profitable entertainment that is generally appreciated.
Our policy in the selection of books has not changed during the year that has passed. That policy has been conservative ; and yet we have endeavored to hold in view the fact that all have rights in the Library, and that within proper limits all tastes should be consulted. Mental food must be palatable, or it will not be devoured. Fortunate it is if the appetite be cultivated aright.
Steps have been taken to add a complete set of Harper's Magazine to the Library. Some of the numbers issued during the last war are already scarce and hard to obtain. This magazine is especially desirable, as the volumes already in the Library are frequently read, and because a department of this monthly has always been so conducted as to furnish a brief but valuable history of the time.
The Library has been indebted during the past year to Mr. A. A. Lovell for a contribution of books, and to Mr. J. H. Baker, Jr., for articles of historical interest and value.
By the financial statement here exhibited, it appears that there remains in the hands of the Town Treasurer, subject to the order
20
of the Trustees, a balance of $136.75. If the usual appropriation should be voted for the Library for the ensuing year, we intend to use this balance for the printing of a new catalogue of the Library. If such a catalogue should be printed, a copy will be supplied without charge to each family having the right to draw books from the Library. In our opinion, the time when a catalogue is de- manded for the convenience of those who consult the Library has come. The following is a statement of the receipts for and expenditures in behalf of the Library :-
