We have but one alarm to report, which occurred on the morn- ing of June 10, caused by the partial destruction of tenement belonging to the heirs of Mary Derby.

GEO. A. MORSE, Clerk.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.

An increasing interest by the citizens and a wide-awake manage- ment have made the past year a prosperous one in our history.

At the annual town meeting, we were instructed to prepare a new catalogue ; and that matter was attended to by members of the Board, the room being closed to the public from March 10 to May I for that purpose. The books were all rearranged and re- numbered, and now appear in regular order upon the shelves. The new catalogue, though incomplete in some respects, meets the approbation of the citizens generally.

August 22, Prof. A. E. Sloan, of Bergen Point, N.J., gave a reading in Chenery Hall for our benefit. He was assisted by Prof. Will. T. Taber, of Worcester, pianist, and by local musical talent. This entertainment netted quite a handsome sum.

No new books have been added during the year ; but, before the March meeting, a considerable number will have been pur- chased, as steps toward this end have already been taken.

We have placed an additional insurance of $600 on books and $200 on furniture, deeming this safeguard a necessity.

We shall soon issue a supplement to the catalogue in the form of leaflets, which can be pasted into the regular catalogue, thus keeping the work complete.

More shelf room will be absolutely necessary, and should be provided at once. Fifty dollars will cover the expense of this addition.

In our report of last year, we strongly recommended the opening of a reading-room. During the present year, we have become more firmly fixed in our opinion that this experiment should be tried. This much accomplished, and the citizens would wonder why the plan had not been tried before. The expense would be a small matter, compared with the benefit to be derived.

From May 1, 1884, to Feb. 1, 1885, seven thousand four hundred and thirty-seven books have been taken out, showing liberal patronage on the part of the reading public.

21

The change of the By-Law in regard to transient residents, allowing them to make a deposit instead of paying for the privilege of taking out books, is much appreciated, and has proved a wise course.

Our financial statement follows, and we simply wish to remind the citizens that at least $175 of the balance here shown will have been expended for books before the March meeting.
