MOSES O. AYRES, Selectmen DANIEL M. PARKER, of

AVERY C. BULLARD, ) Oakham.

REPORT OF OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.

It seems apparent to the Overseers that if there is any doubt as to the lawful settlement of any person or family who apply for aid anywhere in the Commonwealth, they claim one in Oakham. This common idea or claim, has caused the Overseers no little labor and expense in looking up the facts in doubtful cases, and when found buried (as they seemed to be) and moulding in obscurity, are hunted out of their hiding places, a light is found that guides them to their lawful place of settlement.

There is one other case, a family, (colored) husband, wife and two children, now residing in the city of Cambridge. It is claimed by the Overseers that they have a lawful Military Settlement in this town; in this case there seems to be great injustice on the part of the authorities of the Commonwealth in enlisting floating men into the Navy and Army, and assigning them where they choose, and by such assignment are entitled to a lawful Military Settlement. This family still stands denied by the Overseers, who are looking up the case and hope to find evidence that this town is not their lawful place of settlement.

During the year, eighteen persons have received full or partial support.

They further report that they have received of the town, $1,183 88
