TOWN CLERK'S REPORT.
BIRTHS.
To present the statistics of births, marriages and deaths, in the town's annual report, as shown on the preceding pages, is indeed a new feature in the annual reports of Har- wich, yet it is done by the Clerks of many other towns in this commonwealth. If it is continued as now commenced, to those who preserve the reports each successive year, they will be in possession of a record of great value which they could not obtain in any other way without great trouble and expense.
In the table of births will be noticed eight blank spaces as the christian names of the child could not be obtained in season to be inserted in this report. Perhaps parents in the future will see the propriety of having their children named previous to the first day of January of each year, in order to have the record complete and to prevent the trouble that might be involved in the omission thereof, at some future period.
Dropsy.
80
29
MARRIAGES.
The number of marriages registered is 53, being six above the average number entered during the five years last past. As the law requires the clergyman or magistrate to make returns to the clerk of the town in which the marriage was solemnized, it will be noticed that ten couples whose marriages are recorded, were not residents of this town. The oldest person married was 74 years of age ; the youn- gest 16 years of age.
Rev. Mr. Lothrop solemnized the marriage of 23 coup- les ; Rev. Mr. Thomas, 4 ; Rev. Mr. McCord, 3 ; Rev. Mr. Cutting, 3 ; Rev. Mr. Holman, 3; Cyrus Cahoon, Esq. 3 ; Rev. Mr. Couden, 2 ; Rev. Mr. Ashenfelter, 2; Rev. Mr. Miner, Davis, Williams, Tobey, Ring, Colburn. Joyslin, Dodge, Atwood and Westlake, one each.
DEATHS.
The death rate has been so near that of the previous five years, it may be of interest to give the exact figures. In 1881, 47 deaths were recorded ; 1882, 47; 1883, 48; 1884. 49; 1885, 49. The law requiring undertakers to obtain . permits from the Town Clerk before removing for interment a dead body, enables the Clerk to make a correct record of the number of deaths occuring in town cach year.
