In preparing the matter contained in the preceding pages, I have endeavored to comply with the spirit of the vote of the Town and with the letter also, so far as I was able to understand it. It is respectfully suggested that it might be an improvement if the vote of the Town, which now requires the Annual Report to be made wholly by the Auditor, should be so modified as to require the Treasurer and Selectmen and the Overseers of the Poor to make a detailed report in relation to all matters appertaining to each of their respective departments, leaving it for the Auditor to perform only those duties which properly belong to that office. It is also recommended, as a matter of economy that the report of the School Committee should be printed with the financial report. It might also be an additional benefit, by tending to promote an equalization of taxes, if a vote was passed requiring the valuation of estates to be printed in connec- tion with the annual report, as often as once in five years.

In conclusion I cannot refrain from expressing my gratitude to the Town Treasurer, the Chairman of the Selectmen, and Overseers of the Poor, and others, for the valuable assistance so cordially given me in the performance of this duty.

S. W. RICHARDSON, Auditor.
