The balance of money due the East and North Schools, about fifty- five dollars, could not be drawn and paid because those schools had not closed. This sum together with several small, items, amounting to perhaps twenty-five dollars, are all the unpaid bills that we know of.

It will be seen that the Town Debt has been materially lessened the past year. If the town could go on this way it would all be paid off in ten or twelve years ; certainly during the present generation. But this can hardly be expected ; this excess of receipts above expenses is due the present year to several causes which cannot be expected to happen every year. The expenses for Snow and Roads, and the Poor Department have all been comparatively light ; and we have had no vexatious Law Suits-

Another reason is, the act concerning the National Bank Tax did not take effect until our usual amount of money had been raised and

12

appropriated. We have this cum in addition to what was expected last March.

As some extra expense for Roads is contemplated the present year, according to the orders of County Commissioners, and also to provide for contingencias, we cannot safely recommend any curtailment from last year in the amount of money to be raised and appropriated the coming year, as might at first be thought advisable by the large sum we now find in the treasury. Our amount appropriated for schools we find to be a little below the average in other towns.

We sutjoin a list of School Books on band, Feb. 19, 1872.

3 Writing Books ; 6 2d Readers; 2 First Readers ; 6 3d Readers; S 4th Readers; 15 Spellers ; 5 Intermediate Geographies ; 11 Ele- mentary Geographies ; 1 Kerl's Grammar ; 5 Tower's Grammars ; 2 Green's Grammars; 10 Primary Arithmetics ; 11 Intellectual Arithme- tics ; 1 Sargent's 3d Reader ; 2 Histories,-value about $37 00.

School Books to the amount of $1 95 have also been furnished Willie Barker, Alfred Haskell, and Alvin Jowder by the Committee, at the expense of the town.

All of which is respectfully submitted.

NATHANIEL B. BUTLER, ) Selectmen GEORGE BROWN. of

JAMES F. GWINN, Hamilton.

Hamilton, Feb. 29, 1872.

The foregoing account of the Selectmen have been this day examined, and the orders compare with the vouchers, and I find the amount of claims against the Town, which have been settled by orders on the Treasury, to be $3,492 58 all of which are satisfactory vouched for.

The accounts of the Treasurer D. E. Safford, have also been exam- ined and found to be correct, and find the balance remaining in the Treasury to be $2,650 17.

JOHN TREFRY. Auditor.

Hamilton, March 1st, 1872.
