SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE,

Report of School Building Committee,

The School Building Committee submit the following report :

Soon after the annual meeting the committee meet and organized with G. H. Gibney as chairman and A. P. Gardner as secretary.

Mr. E. B. Balcomb of Salem, was chosen as architect. After carefully looking over all available lots in the South District, it was decided to purchase of G. E. Porter three lots adjacent to the old school lot, making one large lot of 45,000 square feet.

The plans and specifications were put out to all Town carpenters and three from out of town. When the bids were opened it was found that all the bids exceeded the appropriation.

The plans were then revised and some slight changes made, when they were again placed for estimates, and several more carpenters were permitted to bid. This time E. C. Cann of Beverly was awarded the contract for the sum of $8,958 and S. E. McGlaughlin the cellar contract, for $863.

Work was at once begun and was completed by December 30, 1897. During the school vacation the school committee had charge of the seating of the building and everything was in readiness for dedication, which took plaec in Hamilton Hall on January 3, 1898.

The Committee wish to say a word for the contractors and sub-contractors, all of whom finished their work in a very satisfactory manner.

G. H. GIBNEY, Chairman.

ARCHITECT'S REPORT.

OFFICE OF EDWIN B. BALCOMB, ARCHITECT, TOWN HOUSE SQUARE, NEAL & NEWHALL BUILDING.

SALEM, MASS., ŒEB. 15, 1898

To Mr. George Gibney, Chairman Building Committee for Hamilton School House, Hamilton, Mass.

DEAR SIR :

I have inspected the school house just finished on the easterly side of Railroad Avenue, at various times during its erection and completion by the contractor, Edgar C. Cann, and find that the work has been faithfully executed and carried out according to plans, specifications, and contract, and would therefore recommend that the final payments be made to the said Edgar C. Cann, according to contract.
