Report of the Trustees and Librarian of the Public Library.
To the Inhabitants of the Town of Hamilton:
The interest in the Public Library, which was noted last year, has increased steadily this year. Not only have several hundred more books and magazines been issued, but the attend- ance at the reading room has been nearly doubled. Through the liberality of some of the patrons of the library a variety of home and foreign magazines have been furnished for the read- ing-room tables, and loaned for home reading. Harper's Week- ly, Harper's Monthly. The Century, Scribner's, The Youth's Companion, The New England Magazine, The Review of Re- views, McClure's, Munsey's, St. Nicholas, The Forester, Bird Lore, Food-Home & Garden, Journal, and The Woman's Home Companion have appeared regularly. Several books of refer- ence have been added, including the latest edition of Webster's International Dictionary.
The Trustees have sought to make the library of special service to all classes; to the public schools by loaning to the · teachers such books of reference as are helpful in their special work ; to the Sunday Schools, by placing reference books in the reading-room which are of special value this year, and by cir- culating a list of these books; and to study classes and individ- uals pursuing special lines of study by loaning books for an ex- tended period.
In buying new books the Trustees have tried to be fair to all classes of readers, taking great care, however, to buy only such books as are well worth reading. Books of general litera- ture. fiction, poetry, history, economics, biography, travel. science and religion have been provided in fair proportions. As in all free public libraries, books of fiction are in greatest de- mand. Recent fiction embraces travel, adventure. history. economics, philosophy and religion to such an extent, however. that all readers necessarily become familiar with these broad sub- jects.

LIBRARY REPORT
In October the Woman's Education Society of Boston loaned to the library, as to all other free libraries of the State, a collection of one hundred and fourteen views of London for free exhibition. These excellent photographs and sketches, which were arranged on the walls of the school room in the Town Hall building, were visited by a large number of people, and proved to be of great educational value.
The librarian has done considerable work in perfecting the card catalogue, and in preparing a supplementary finding list, containing all the books added to the library since 1895, ar- ranged under the heads of classified subject, author and fiction lists. This supplement is just appearing, and is the result of much hard and skilful labor. Hereafter a limited number of bulletins will be issued with each addition of books.
