Library Report.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES AND LIBRARIAN OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

To the Inhabitants of the Town of Hamilton :

The Trustees are glad to report that all departments of the Public Library have grown steadily during the past year. More bound volumes and magazines have been issued than in any previous year ; and the reading-room has attracted many patrons, so that sometimes it has been greatly overcrowded. In the near future the question will arise as to a larger reading-room : Harper's Weekly, Harper's Monthly, The Century, Scribner's, The Youth's Companion, The New England Magazine, The Review of Reviews, The Atlantic, McClure's, Munsey's, St. Nicholas, The Forester, Bird-Lore and Education have appeared on the reading-room tables, besides nu- merous other magazines and periodicals which have come as gifts. Several books of reference have been added, of general interest and have been used extensively by pupils and teachers of the public schools.

In buying new books great care has been excercised to select only such books as are well worth reading. The object has been. not to buy as many books as possible, but as good as possible. The Trustees have tried to satisfy the tastes of all classes of readers, and. have provided books on a large variety of subjects. They have furnished a considerable number of volumes on matters of current interest, such as The Philippines, China, South Africa, Cuba, Ex- pansion, Military and Naval affairs, Nature study, etc. These books have been placed upon the shelves of the reading room.

It is a matter of regret that nearly seven-eighths of the books issued have been fiction, notwithstanding the fact that almost all the fiction is first class. The books on general literature, poetry, his- tory, economics, biography, travel, science and religion remain on the shelves unused. The Librarian has created a demand for such books, as well as for the older standard fiction, by placing them in a conspicuous place in the delivery-room, where they may be ex- amined. The best part of the Library is still unused to a consider- able extent.

LIBRARY REPORT

The Librarian has continued the work on the card-catalogue ; and as soon as practicable will issue a bulletin of all the latest ac- cessions.

The delivery station at the store of Mr. H. E. Andrews at South Hamilton, continues to be an important feature in the work of the Library, about fifty per cent. of the books issued going to that branch. The Trustees and the general public are greatly indebted to Mr. Andrews for his courtesy in this matter.
