We regretfully have to report the sudden death in January last of our Superintendent of Cemetery, Mr. Edward C. Tibbetts, who has long given faithful and efficient service in care of the yard. Mr. Tibbetts devoted much of his time from boyhood to his death in this work, and always seemed to take great pride in having the grounds look neat and clean. Where so much of his time was spent in life he now lies sleeping in death.

At a meeting of the Commissioners, held January 25 of this year, Mr. George E. Roberts was appointed Superintendent of Cemetery.

Owing to the incomplete condition of our Town By-Laws, we have not been able to put all our work in the condition we had contemplated.

A plan of the cemetery is being made and is near completion. But as payment for it must come into the next financial year,

25

TOWN REPORT

we ask for an appropriation large enough to cover this bill, the amount allowed last year for this purpose not having been used.

When the revised Town By-Laws shall have been adjudi- cated we shall put our work into proper shape.

All deeds to be issued of cemetery lots will contain Rules and Regulations for the government of the cemetery.

The Commissioners recommend an appropriation by the town of $300.00.

GEORGE K. KNOWLTON, Cemetery GEORGE H. GIBNEY, F. C. NORTON, - Commissioners.

Report of Tree Warden

Early in the Spring Mr. Matthews called the Warden's at- tention to the brown tail moth nests that appeared on some of the trees on the highways ; these were removed as soon as possible, and during the summer insects did not molest the trees to any extent.

Early in May about one hundred and sixty fine maples were set on Main Street and all lived, notwithstanding the extremely dry weather. About forty trees of the two hundred purchased are all right for Spring setting.

Two fine elms were set in front of the Town Hall. Mr. Myers instructed his foreman to render all assistance possible in setting the trees. This he did, bringing several men and a team to draw soil, so that the trees were promptly set with but slight exposure of roots. Trees have been trimmed and some removed.

The Warden went over the line with the telegraph men to regulate the trimming of trees. The season was not favorable for the usual growth of trees but the trees on the highways seem to be in good condition and each year make the town more attractive.

O. F. BROWN, Tree Warden.
