There is need of considerable repairs on this building. One side of the roof will need to be shingled, and there is great need of new blackboards. The cost of slating the plas- tering, which is broken in several places, will soon exceed the cost of slate, and we think it is more profitable for the town to put in slate wherever it can be done to advantage.

At the commencement of this year we were obliged to accept the resignation of Miss Lyman, who has taught this school so long and successfully, on account of impaired health, but were fortunate in securing Miss Clary, who has remained with us during the year.
In the summer vacation some person or persons broke a

window light and opened the window and threw ink over a large place on the ceiling, greatly marring the looks of the building. Other damage was also done to the building.
We have given this building two coats of Averill paint and quite a large portion of it has had three coats, and it is in good condition and ought to remain so for several years.

There is need of considerable repairs on the blackboards and windows in this school house, and the building is greatly in need of one or two coats of paint.
A new stove and pipe have been put in during the past year, adding greatly to the comfort of the pupils, as well as to the safety of the buildings.

The number of pupils in this school increased so largely that we were obliged to provide more seats, and at a greatly reduced price from new seats, your committee have been able to provide ample accommodation for all.
We have been obliged to make several changes in teach- ers the past year, which is usually a hindrance to the prog- ress of a school, yet we feel that with the teachers we have secured there has been a very marked improvement both in discipline and in school work.

There is now due from the state the amount that the town has paid for tuition of pupils in Easthampton and Northampton, and the amount that the town has paid for extra pay of teachers, which will give the town quite a large balance in its favor. This amount will not be paid by the state until Feb. 1902, and the town will be obliged to pay those bills in advance for the whole year which ends with the school year in June.
The amount paid by the state for extra compensation of teachers is paid only on condition that the town shall pay in addition a sum not less than the amount which has been paid in average wages for the three preceding years in each
25
case, but your committee think that with what is due from the state they will be able to give you the thirty -four weeks, if the town will raise the sum of one thousand dollars.

HENRY MILLER CLAPP, Auditor
REPORT
of the Superintendent of Schools.
TO THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE:
GENTLEMEN :
I respectfully submit the regular annual report of the Superintendent of Schools for the school year 1900-1901.
There is nothing new in the regular work of the schools to report. Most of the time is devoted to the common branches and we try to secure thorough work rather than to cover much ground. Tests are given monthly. At the Hill school the number of pupils was so large that it was necessary to make some arrangement for more seats. The rows of seats were crowded together and another row put in. It is much harder to manage a school and to secure good results under such conditions.

TEXT-BOOKS.
Many of the reading books were so worn out and torn as to be useless. These were gathered up and exchanged for new books. For the sake of introducing their books, publishers are glad to make a liberal allowance for old books taken in exchange for new ones. 103 new readers were secured. These are sufficient to give one new book to each pupil in town. Nichol's arithmetic has been in- troduced for supplementary work. These books have been used in Easthampton and Southampton for some time and have given excellent satisfaction. The town is now well supplied with text-books. The supplies are purchased in connection with Easthampton and in this way the town gets the advantage of purchasing in large quantities.
Very respectfully,
W. D. MILLER.
