One side of the roof in this school-house needs shingling and considerable repairing will need to be done in a short time. On account of the extra work done on the school- houses where we have put in new seats, we have not done as much as is really needed in the others.

The record of attendance during the year has been uni- formly good and we find by the register that Enos J. Mon- tague, Grace W. Montague, Louise and Mabel Bridgman have not been absent nor tardy for the whole year but once. On account of sickness Miss Murray was obliged to give up the school the last term and Miss Vera A. Chapman took her place. We have during the last year been able to put in a new floor, and furnish the school-house with modern seats, and had it covered with a coat of paint inside, so that the room has now a very neat appearance.

We find that there have been no pupils in this school who have not been absent nor tardy during the whole year, but several who have been absent but one or two days.
At the end of the first term Miss Chapman was obliged to give up the school on account of sickness in her family, and Miss Judd entered the school and taught the remainder of the year.
Although this school-house was shingled but recently, there are many bad spots in the roof, and it will have to be again shingled on at least one side next year.

Raymond Crandall was not tardy nor dismissed during the year, and absent but one day.
There is more damage done by lawless people to this school-house than to all the rest put together, nearly all the glass in one window was broken and the sash was badly in- jured. Bullets have been shot through the school-house sev- eral times, and the doors have been broken in.
Besides the ordinary repairs, we have this year put in a new hard pine floor, and re-furnished the room with modern seats, and had the room painted throughout inside, and now have a neat, comfortable school-room.

The balance remaining over will not be sufficient to cover the expeuses for the remainder of the school year, and can be used for no other purpose than for schools.
Your committee have been able by economy to pay all the costs of the new floors and seats in the South and North- east school-houses, out of the school money without asking any help from the town outside of the appropriation, and we feel that the men who have done this work, when we con- sider that they have drawn the material from the lumber yard, and from the depot, and done the work in good shape, have been very reasonable in their charges, the whole ex- pense for labor being less than forty dollars for both school- houses.

REPORT
of the Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee:
Gentlemen :-
I respectfully submit the regular annual report of the Superintendent of Schools for the past school year.
In September all the schools except one opened with new teachers, although two of them, Miss Chapman and Miss Judd, had taught in other schools in town. The teachers that have not before taught in town are:
TEACHER SCHOOL WHERE EDUCATED
Edith M. Hagerman Northeast Mt. Holyoke College
Chella M. Underwood Northwest Northfield Seminary
The following statistics are taken from the reports of the teachers at the close of the school year 1906-1907. ending last June :
Whole number enrolled 85
Average membership 75.61
Average attendance 69.64
Per cent. of attendance 92

This report covers the five schools under the control of the town of Westhampton. In addition to these pupils the town sends a number of pupils to the union school in Loud- ville, which is controlled by Northampton.
The work done in the schools is practically the same as that done in the Easthampton schools. Of course it is im- possible for a teacher, who has six or eight classes in her room, to give as much time to one class as a teacher can give who has only one or two classes in her room. On the other hand, there are certain distinct advantages in a district school. As the pupils are all in one room, they can advance as rapidly as they are able to do the work. Also, the younger pupils learn much from hearing the more advanced classes recite. It seems that pupils who go from district schools are likely to do quite as good work in high schools as the average of the pupils that come from graded city or village schools.
Respectfully submitted, W. D. MILLER
