Emily M. Hathaway has no tardy mark on the register and only one-half day absent during the year.
The repairs called for last year have been made and the schoolhouse was in very good condition and a supply of wood had been put in, and the total loss of everything by the fire accounts for the extra expense and made another supply of wood necessary.

The balance this year will be smaller than it has been for several years, but the reason for this is accounted for in the payment to Northampton of the extra amount for the Loudville school, and the extra cost in providing a place for the pupils in the North-west. At the close of the year, we shall receive from Northampton a pro rata share for the maintenance of the Loudville school.
The amount paid for music this year includes one term of last year, and the amount paid by the teacher for music text-books.
The town has been unfortunate in the loss of one school- house from fire, the first loss of this kind since the district system was abolished and perhaps the first it has ever had. On the eve of Dec. 5, 1907, the North-west schoolhouse took fire, probably from a defective chimney, and before anything could be done to put it out, it was entirely burned. The loss was a total one and the Insurance Co. did not question it, and at once paid the Treasurer the full amount of $300.00,
30
for which it was insured.
Your committee at once examined the premises, and an arrangement was made with Mr. C. L. Williams, whereby two rooms were hired for the remainder of the school year, and quite a comfortable place was fitted up and the school has continued with only a few days' loss of time.
In regard to the maintenance of the Loudville school, we received the following proposition from the school com- mittee of Northampton, and after due consideration we de- cided to accept it, and the school is now under the supervis- ion of the Westhampton school committee.
Northampton, Mass., Sept. 26, 1907 MR. C. N. LOUD,
Chairman of School Committee,
Westhampton, Mass.
My dear Mr. Loud :-
At the September meeting of the. Northampton school committee, the following recommendation from my monthly report was unanimously accepted and adopted.
"I recommend that the Westhampton school committee be allowed to assume control of the Loudville school under the following conditions :
1. The general policy of the Loudville school shall be determined by the Westhampton school committee, who shall also hire the teacher, furnish supervision, keep the building în good repair, and provide all the necessary books and supplies.
31
2. The total annual expense of maintaining the school shall be divided between Easthampton, Westhampton and Northampton in proportion to the days' attendance of pupils from the three towns.
3. This arrangement shall be in force as soon as these conditions are accepted by vote of the Westhampton school committee or tacitly approved by their action in assuming control of the school, and shall continue in effect until either committee notifies the other in writing that the terms of the agreement are no longer satisfactory."
Very sincerely yours,
F. K. CONGDON,
Sec'y of School Committee
Respectfully submitted,
C. N. LOUD, A. D. MONTAGUE, School F. D. BRIDGMAN, Committee.

This report covers the five schools that were under the control of Westhampton last year. In addition to these pupils here reported the town sent a number of pupils to the union school in Loudville, which was controlled by North- ampton last year.
The reports are made out as required by the state. Pu. pils going from one school to another in the same town are counted only once, and pupils coming from another town in the state are not counted because they were counted in the town from which they came. '
There has been no change in the general character of the work. We try to make a constant improvement in the
36
standard of the schools and to put especial emphasis on the studies that are most important. Of course the "three r's" will always stand foremost in any system of schools. We think that the young children learn to read quickly and well and the multiplication tables receive constant attention.
Respectfully submitted,
W. D. MILLER
