Charles R. Burt, Louise A. Clapp, Evlyn H. Hath - away have neither an absent nor tardy mark during the year, and many of the other pupils have lost but two or three days, which shows that the parents of the children have been interested in the school as well as the children. The teacher has also been much interested in the pupils and several have this year entered the higher grade schools.

This is the first time in many years that there has not been any in the school not absent nor tardy, and some years there have been several. Many of the pupils have been kept at home on account of the scarlet fever, but by prompt care on the part of the parents it was prevented from be- coming an epidemic through the school.

Irving Vias has been absent but one half day and has no tardy mark. Alice Connolly has but one day absent and no tardy mark. There has been quite a saving to the town in the cost of maintaining this school during the past year and we feel highly pleased in securing a teacher who has given so good satisfaction to take the place of the former teacher who has done such thorough and successful work for so many years.

We have been very fortunate in securing as comfortable a place for this school after the schoolhouse burned, and the delay was only for a few days. The location was so near the center of distance that none of the pupils were greatly inconvenienced.

There has always been more damage done to this school- house than to any other in town. For the past season the teacher has been more or less troubled by some one, who had a key to the door, going in and erasing work she had put on the blackboard for the next day and putting on characters that were a disgrace to the ones who did it. A new door has been put on and a different lock.

The balance in the treasury will all be needed to pay the running expenses of the schools through the remainder of the school year, and, as the treasurer has already stated, can can be used for no other purpose. We have received from the state a blank requiring us to state every item for which the state money has been used, and unless the whole amount can be accounted for it will probably affect the amount which the state has given the town.

The selectinen, together with the school committee, met at the place where the old schoolhouse stood, and after ex- amining the grounds around that and the ground on the other side of the highway finally decided that the site where we have located the new building was nearer the center of travel for all who have pupils to send and much better pro- tected from the wind,

We have now a building sufficiently large to accommo- date all the pupils, and should the town ever conclude to sell any part of the lot bought of Mr. F. N. Kneeland they can reserve enough land for a large play ground for the pupils. Mr. Hathaway has also given us a right to a very nice spring of cool water only a short distance from the school- house and we feel that the town is very fortunate in being able to procure so good a location.

Respectfully submitted,

F. D. BRIDGMAN, A. D. MONTAGUE, School Committee.

There has been no change in the general character of the work. As in the past, we try to make a constant im- provement in the standard of the schools, and to put especial emphasis on the studies that seem to be of the most impor- tance to the pupils. Several pupils expect to enter high schools next September.

Respectfully submitted,

W. D. MILLER
