Report of Supervisor of Music
To the School Committee :
As we wish everyone to be interested in our school music, we give a condensed outline of the work.
The work is done on two lines; knowing, which in- cludes theory of time and tune, and 'doing, which includes singing and written work. Each school is in two divisions, -the little ones, who learn songs by rote, the scale by rote, then the first five tones of the scale, drilled so as to skip among them, the drill being by number dictation, then staff representation and written work. Later they have slip- singing, which is individual sight singing of eight measure melodies, eighty of these for cach grade, and no two alike.
The older ones continue on the same lines and also have part-singing and much new theory, oral and written. As all notation and time are the same when applied to in- strumental music, drill has been given on a keyboard chart that the pupils shall learn to make the connection of the
30
staff and keyboard. A brief outline of ancient history, short biographical sketches of classical composers and a list of their best known compositions have been studied. Pictures of orchestral instruments, also their grouping in the orchestra, are reviewed each year. Musical form, inter- pretation and harmony, for lack of time, have only been touched upon.
During the past few years our pupils doing the best work, could, on leaving our schools, pass an examination into any high school, though the rural schools can never give the same amount of drill or the same atmosphere which a city, and especially a city like Northampton, can give. We very much wish that this school work might arouse sufficient interest to support some form of community sing- ing, which of all phases of singing should give the greatest amount of pleasure to the greatest number. This thought was in mind when asking Mr. Short of Northampton if he would conduct some chorus singing here for the benefit of the entire town, but for lack of time he could not consider it.
Two of the best music magazines, "The Musician" and "The Etude," and several good books are now in our library. No public library in the country has a finer col- lection of music than Forbes Library, and that, too, is frec to us.
Only for the faithful co-operation of the teachers could this music study have been carried on and present results have been attained. All parents and friends are welcome

in the schools at any time; we surely need to work to- gether.
Respectfully, ALMA J. BRIDGMAN.
