Report of the Music Supervisor
To the School Committee :---
This year's work in school music has been as thorough- ly done as in any year ; but, owing to fewer children and no boys with changed voices we cannot make the showing to really do justice to the work done. Rather than tell more of our own work I will pass on a few thoughts from others.
Quoting from Mr. Thomas Tapper: "Why does a boy whistle when he needs heart? Why did the soldier boys sing 'Dixie' or 'Marching Through Georgia' when there was danger of over-much thinking of 'Home, Sweet Home,' or of the picture of the morrow's carnage?"
General Leonard Wood has recently said that "It is just as essential that soldiers know how to sing as it is that they carry rifles and learn to shoot. There isn't anything in the world, even letters from home, that will raise a soldier's spirits like a good, catchy, marching tune."
If music as a part of education helps us to adjust our- selves to our problems, as in the case of the boy who whistles and the soldiers who sing, let us make all the use we can of our musical instruments and singing in our homes.
Also from Mr. Tapper : "The dreadful thing about most
29
communities is the absence of any centralizing influence that bring's people together and through some special acti- vity, such as chorus singing, enriches life."
It is said by those working in any line of community activity that small permanent results follow upon the efforts to entertain; large results upon the working together.
We know we cannot afford to drop the interest in our regular studies just because we leave school. Music, too, has its place, and this can be worked out in our town to benefit our homes, Church, Grange, and any society.
Respectfully yours,
ALMA J. BRIDGMAN. 1
