Westhampton, Mass., Dec. 31, 1928.

I have examined the accounts of the School Committee and find that they have drawn orders and have vouchers for the same to the amount of Seven thousand one hun- dred seventy-four dollars and fifty-four cents ($7.174.54).

LYMAN W. CLAPP, Auditor.

Report of Superintendent of Schools

To the School Committee :

I herewith submit my fourth annual report of the schools of Westhampton.

Last summer the south end of the Center School was extended to correspond to the north end, thus giving a fine class room of about the same size as the grammar room. The town now has a modern school building in excellent condition. It needs only modern plumbing to make it an up-to-date school house.

At the beginning of the fall term the Hill school was closed and the children transported to the Center School. where Miss Lunden has the four upper grades and Mrs. Cushing the four lower grades. In the special subjects Mrs. Cushing has charge of the music in both rooms, and Miss Lunden has penmanship and drawing in both rooms. The results of the whole system are gratifying.

Seven pupils are attending high schools in various places. Tuition and transportation charges are high. which swell the gross amount of the school budget. Of this sum a considerable amount is returned to the town from the state. This money is credited to the Excess and Deficiency Fund. Following the financial statement is a

25

statement showing the net cost of the schools to the town.

I wish to call attention to Mrs. Rockford's report, sett- ing forth the activities of the Hampshire County Public Health Association.

I wish to thank the teachers for their cooperation and the committee for its support.

The record of registration and attendance for the school year ending June 15, 1928, was as follows:

Report of School Nurse

During the past year of 1928 twelve days were given to school nursing, although the school nursing contract calls for ten days. This could not be avoided. It was due to the fact that in the spring a toxin-anti-toxin elinie was held, and in the fall the school dentist needed assistance.

All the children have been weighed and measured four times. Many health talks were given, and about fourteen home visits were made.

Once a year Dr. Taylor examines all the school child- ren and at this time he is assisted by the school nurse, who in turn makes home visits to insure the co-operation of the

26

parents.

All children up to the time of this report have been vaccinated.

In May. 1928, Dr. Taylor conducted a toxin-anti-toxin clinic. Forty-five children attended. Eighteen of the number were pre-school children. We hope that a check up can be made in the spring of 1929. The Schick test will determine exactly how many children have been immunized from diphtheria.

In early May a Child Health Day celebration was held at the town hall. It was well attended by parents and friends. This program was put on by the school children. They sang, recited and danced around the May pole. The children had been instructed about their personal hygiene. posture and nutrition. Children were encouraged through- out the year to carry out the above mentioned plan, that they might be rewarded at this celebration with a tag for good posture. (this was judged by the teachers) a tag for normal weight, and a tag made in the shape of a small milk bottle. This was presented to those who brought milk to school for their noon lunch.

The school nurse distributed the tags. with a word about their being given as a reward, and hoped that every child would be eligible for these tags in 1929. We hope to add another tag, this one to be given in recognition of the child who has made a yearly visit to his or her dentist.

During the month of November, Dr. C. E. Sherwood. the Red Cross dentist. held a dental clinic for the school children. Sixty-two children were examined. Fourteen did not need attention and forty-eight needed attention. Thir- ty attended the clinic.

I wish to extend my thanks for the co-operation re- ceived from the superintendent of schools. school commit- tee, school physician, teachers and parents.

Respectfully submitted,

GENEVA F. ROCKFORD. School Nurse.
