Report of Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee :
I herewith submit my fifth annual report of the schools of Westhampton.
Work has gone quietly and efficiently for the past year. A few new text books have been purchased, but more are needed as the books in use are wearing out.
During the summer the old earth toilets were removed and modern flush closets were installed. Cement floors were laid and the walls carefully insulated. A septic tank with a tile field takes care of all waste. The building is now practically complete save for occasional painting and repairs. If electric lights are carried to Westhampton, they should be placed in the schoolhouse, for on dark winter days the window lighting is insufficient.
If a telephone were installed in the school it would be a great convenience, for, as it is now, it is necessary to go to a neighbor's house to receive or put in a call. Parents often wish to keep track of their children when slightly indisposed.
After careful inquiry and the use of questionnaires I have found that the most progressive elementary schools and some of the best high schools have discarded the old formal mid-year and final examinations for periodic tests. These consume much less time and represent more fairly the actual work of the pupils. We are now trying this experiment.
In closing I wish to commend the teachers for their work and thank the committee for its support.
The record of registration and attendance for the school year ending June 14, 1929, was as follows :

Report of School Nurse
During the past year of 1929 ten days were devoted to school nursing. All of the children have been weighed and measured several times during the year. On each visit, all children were given a close physical inspection.
Many plans and contests were entered into to encour- age the cultivation of good health habits. Only with the cooperation of parents will these health lessons become habitual.
It is for the improvement in nutrition, weight, correc- tion of physical defects and other health achievements that May Day is celebrated each year.
Several of the parents took the advantage of Dr. Young's clinic at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital and had their children's tonsils and adenoids removed.
Two children were taken to Dr. Whitney's clinic at the Northampton State Hospital.
Once a year Dr. Walter Taylor examines all the school children, at which time he is assisted by the school nurse, who in turn makes home visits to urge the parents' co- operation.
It was our good fortune this fall to be able to secure the use of an audiometer. All, except the first grade chil- dren, had their hearing tested. The report shows that 47 took the test, 39 produced a report showing no loss of hear- ing, and 8 had doubtful reports. The parents of this last group were notified of the test and results.
Due to a reorganization of the Red Cross Dental Clinic service, it has not been possible for the Westhampton chil- dren to reecive any dental attention this year. This service is very much needed. Much stress has been laid on the cleaning of the teeth.
Grateful appreciation is expressed for the cooperation received from the Superintendent of Schools, School Com- mittee, School Physician, Teachers and Parents.
Respectfully submitted,
GENEVA F. ROCKFORD, School Nurse.
