Report of Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee :
I herewith submit my seventh annual report of the schools of Westhampton.
In the last seven years the record has shown a marked increase in the number of pupils in attendance. The whole number enrolled last year shows a net gain of 35% over the enrollment of 1925. The whole enrollment of the present year to date is 83, which is 6 more than that of last year. Fourteen pupils were in high school and 3 in vocational school, making a total of 100 pupils in school during the fall- term. Since the population of Westhampton was given in the last census as 374, school pupils constitute 26.7% of the entire population. This is an unusually high figure.
The primary room has been severely taxed to take care of the large numbers of lower grade pupils. Should these numbers continue, it may be advisable if not necessary to open a third room another year. At the present time three fair-sized rooms could be maintained.
The following figures show the attendance record since 1925:

The high percentage of attendance is a source of grati- fication.
In these days of financial depression the costs of
26
schools is an important item. There are 355 cities and towns in the state which are divided into four groups. West- hampton is in group four, consisting of towns of less than 5.000 population and not maintaining high schools. There are 124 towns in this group. For the year ending Decem- ber 31, 1930. the town spent from local taxation alone $35.87 per pupil. Its rank in the group is 122. For the same year the cost per pupil from all sources of income was $79.09 with a rank of 112. In other words, in group four only two towns spent less on schools from local taxa- tion and 12 spent less when all sources of income were included.
Health officials have been active in holding clinics of various kinds and in giving tests.
I wish to thank all who have helped in carrying on the work of the department.
Respectfully submitted,
HERBERT D. CASEY

Report of the School Nurse
From the opening of the schools in September to Janu- ary 1, 1932, three and one-half days were devoted to school nursing.
The yearly vision tests were made in September.
The Red Cross loaned us the use of their audiometer for hearing tests and these were given in October. We found six children who should have further examination as to their hearing, and with the permission of their parents, they will be given an opportunity to attend a clinic in Northampton, conducted by Dr. J. D. Collins.
In December the School Physician, Dr. J. B. Ryan, gave the Schick test to all those who were given the toxin- antitoxin in May. Those who were read as positive will have a chance to receive a second course of inoculations, later in the school year.
I wish to extend my thanks for the cooperation re- ceived from the Superintendent of Schools, School Com- mittee, School Physician, Teachers and Parents.
Respectfully submitted,
HELEN K. COLEMAN.

Report of the Memorial Library
The new Edwards-Thayer Memorial library, in which are housed the books of the Westhampton Reunion Libra- ry, was completed and occupied late in May, 1931,. on the site donated by Mrs. Vera Chapman Clapp, in memory of her parents.
It was designed by Karl S. Putnam of Northampton and is considered by the State Library Commission as one of the best examples of simple colonial architecture and of small library design in the State. It is frequently studied by building committees from other communities.
Wall. grading and cement work were supplied by D. A. Riedel ; plumbing and heating by W. J. Burrows; lum- ber by A. E. Witherell : wood trim by Tessier Bros. ; plas- tering by George E. Carroll; carpentry and fitting by Fred Baxter, aided by John C. Hathaway; roofing by Evans Bros. ; painting by Chas. J. Dickinson.
Building and furnishings cost $7,372.96. Of this $6,000 came from the Edwards-Thayer endowment; $200 from a gift by J. Goddard Clark, banker, of San Francisco; $100 from the State Library Commission ; $35 from Franklin G. Neal, for the lantern ; and the remainder from Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Montague. Draperies were given by Mrs. A. J. Plate, Mrs. Franklin G. Neal and Mrs. L S. Richard; statuary, by Mrs. Plate. Mrs. Richard and Mrs. E. H. Montague ; fireplace fixtures by Strong A. Phelps.
After weeding and re-cataloguing under the direction of Miss E. Louise Jones of the Public Libraries division of the Massachusetts Department of Public Education, the books numbered 3,267, including new gifts of nearly 200 and 48 newly purchased.
Book circulation in 1931 was 1.187. an increase of 29 per cent over 1930; magazine circulation was 560, an in- crease of 16 per cent. The per capita use of library books in Westhampton exceeded that in Northampton last vear.
The library has on interest in endowment $4,700. Its
29
1931 operating income included $211.50 from interest and, from the town, $50 by direct appropriation and $90.70 from the dog tax. Because of doubled work the salary of the librarian, Mrs. Marion Mascho, has been increased from $50 to $100.
Among the additions to books made in 1931 are the "Encyclopedia Brittanica," presented by Franklin G. Neal ; 150 volumes and magazines, by L. S. Richard; and “Mes- sages and Papers of the Presidents," by Mrs. Harriet F. Parrish of Chicago. A detailed list of all additions in 1931 may be consulted in the library.
LIVY S. RICHARD, Sec'y Library Committee.
