Report of Superintendent of Schools

To the School Committee: .

I herewith submit my ninth annual report of the schools of Westhampton.

Instruction has gone smoothly and efficiently, fol- lowing the lines of a new course of study which was placed in the hands of the teachers at the beginning of the present school year. New text-books, to a larger number than usual, have aided the teachers in maintain- ing their required standards of work. Our graduates now attending high schools and colleges continue to do credit- able work, some earning advanced standing.

The school committee took advantage of the Civil Works Administration program to get an appropriation for completing work on the school house. As this report is written the back hall has been lined and painted one coat, the front hall has been painted, a closet built for the intermediate room, a new door cut from the grammar room to the front porch, and the outside door in the pri- mary room changed to swing outward. These last two changes follow the recommendations of the state build- ing inspector. An earth wall was pressing against the back of the building, and this has been removed to a width of several feet. A new top was put on the chim- ney and the underpinning repaired. The work yet to be done includes finishing the inside painting and the painting of the entire outside of the schoolhouse.

The department is indebted to Mr. Arthur Witherell for presenting and erecting a flag pole on the school grounds.

Hot lunches have been provided for the transported children at a nominal cost. Much credit for this is due the teachers, various individuals and organizations, and especially Mrs. Dorothy Harwood.

Report of the School Nurse

The school health program for the past year has been carried on as in previous years.

In January, the Hampshire County Red Cross Den- tal Clinic came. The men's club was responsible for the supply bill and also free work to the amount of five do !- lars.

The figures for the work done are as follows :

Number of children examined 85

Number of children with dental defects

65

Number of children receiving clinic care 36

Number of cleanings 10

Number of fillings-temporary teeth

5

Number of fillings-permanent teeth 37

Number of extractions-temporary teeth 9

Number of extractions-permanent teeth

I think the children in Westhampton are very for-' tunate that they can have hot soup at noon to eat with their lunches. To those who are responsible for making this work possible, should be given our hearty thanks.

In May, Dr. Ryan, school physician gave toxin-anti- toxin to twenty children (thirteen of preschool age). These clinics will probably be omitted for a year or so as the majority of the children in school have been pro- tected from diphtheria through these inoculations.

A day in May is always set aside as National Child Health Day and many of the schools have special exer- cises along health lines on that day. The teachers in Westhampton have usually worked a health program in- to their graduation exercises, instead of having two dis- tinct programs on two different days.

Dr. Ryan gave his usual physical examination in June.

One boy was given a chance to spend four weeks at Camp Hodgkins in July. The children from the county who attend the camp, are given a fine vacation under ex-

28

cellent supervision and we always hope they will carry home and practice some of the health habits they have observed there.

In the fall, the Chadwick follow-up clinic of the State Department of Public Health came to Easthamp- ton and made it possible for the two Westhampton child- ren to be X-rayed and examined again. The service will continue each year.

I wish to thank the Red Cross for the use of the audiometer, the Men's Club for their financial aid for the Dental Clinic and all others who have helped in the school work.

Respectfully submitted,

HELEN COLEMAN.
