REPORT OF THE Superintendent of Schools
l'o the School Committee :
FINANCES
We spent $13,469.86 during the past financial year to continue the education of 101 pupils, including those at Smith's School. The town has received reimbursements from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and from Northampton amounting to $8,733.81, which leaves a net cost to our taxpayers of $4,736.05. According to the An- nual State Report of the department of education West- hampton pays less from local taxation for the education of each boy and girl than any town or city in the state with the exception of Warwick. Yet with the aid of these additional funds from the state we spend more per pupil for education than the average town in the state. Accord- ing to the last report for the school year ending June 30, 1940, the average cost per pupil for education in Massa- chusetts. was $100.43, whereas in Westhampton it was $138.62. But, it cost only $2.87 per pupil for transporta- tion in the state, leaving for the average pupil a cost of $97.56 exclusive of transportation, whereas Westhampton had to pay more than $40 per pupil for transportation. Therefore, the cost of education, less transportation, was lower in Westhampton than it was in the average town in this commonwealth. Considering that the town had a valuation in 1939 of $4483. per pupil in net average mem- bership which gave us a state rank of 296, indicating that 295 towns and cities had more wealth in assessed valua- tion per pupil than Westhampton, and considering that we have a state rank of 123 in our per capita cost of sup- port of public schools, our town is doing more than the average for the education of our boys and girls here.

REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENTS
Our schoolhouse and playground are in better con- dition than they were a year ago, The enlargement of the school playground in late August, the construction of a new drain from the septic tank, the grading of the addi- tional playground space, the completion of the fence, and the erection of playground apparatus and two basketball baskets have increased our facilities for play more than 100%, and have been appreciated by every boy and girl.
Our new seats and desks not only aid the teacher in carrying on modern classroom work but also help all the boys and girls to improve their posture. Since the chairs and tables may be adjusted to the growing children, the physical health of each boy and girl should be improved. The new cupboard for textbooks and supplies, bulletin boards, and new window shades have been of great value to the class in the middle grade room. Repainting ceilings and walls of both classrooms and corridor is of great as- sistance in providing more light for each child's desk and has also made the building more sanitary as well as at- tractive.
The state building inspector informed us this autumn that we should provide a supply of fresh air to each class- room equivalent to thirty cubic feet per air per minute per pupil and the removal of a similar amount through the foul air ducts. He also recommended that the recircu- lating opening located in the corridor adjacent to the boys' toilet be changed to another location to insure an uncontaminated supply of fresh air.
New sets of text-books have been purchased in the social science field, in the general science field, and in the reading fields for some classes. Our books are now in ex- cellent shape.
