The School Committee is glad to report that the lighting system at the schoolhouse is vastly improved. Through the cooperation of Mr. Clifton Ewing and Mr. John Putnam, four large fluorescent fixtures were in- stalled in each of the three classrooms. A vote of thanks from the committee and from the townspeople is due both Mr. Ewing and Mr. Putnam for obtaining and in- stalling these lights. They gave their time and services gladly and without remuneration.
Other repairs made at the schoolhouse were, paint- ing in the halls and toilets, refinishing the tops of the desks, and a general thorough cleaning during the sum- mer vacation. Since we were unable to hire painters, the painting of the classrooms and exterior painting planned for this year, has had to be postponed, and must come out of next year's budget.
In May, and again in November, we held "Visitors' Night" at the school. Both times, the response from parents and friends was gratifying, and we feel that such sessions are worthwhile. May we take this oppor- tunity to thank the teachers, and bus drivers, for their cooperation, and the Mother's Club for providing the refreshments each time.

One drinking fountain for over 65 pupils caused much crowding at recesses, and, after considerable search, we were able to locate another bubbler, and have it installed this December.
We were sorry to receive Dr. Manwell's resignation in June, and Mrs. Gregory's in December. They have been faithful in promoting the health program of our children, and we are grateful to them for all the time and patience they have spent in our behalf. Dr. Herman Felsen has been appointed school physician, and Mrs. Ellis Hover school nurse. We feel fortunate indeed in obtaining their services.
The School Committee owes much to our Superin- tendent, Mr. Dexter, who has given us valuable assist- ance this year. We appreciate that, for a very small share of the general expense, we receive a great deal of expert leadership.
Again we want to thank all of you who have co- operated with us so wholeheartedly this year, and we ask your help in making our schools better than ever next year.

REPORT OF THE Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee and Citizens of the Town of Westhampton:
I am pleased to submit this, my second annual re- port of the Public Schools of Westhampton. This is the fifty-sixth in the series.
We have completed another year without any changes on the faculty, hence there have been no inter- ruptions in the school work caused by teachers leaving the system and new ones coming in. The teacher turn- over is great in many schools, and few schools exist that have not had to replace some teachers.
Graduates of Center School continue to do well in high and vocational schools. This is a test of the teach- ing of the fundamentals in the "grades."
The physical education supervision initiated last year has been continued, and the children seem to be a little more conscious of better posture.
Writing supervision, under the Rhinehart Functional Handwriting System, has been continued, and we are proud of the penmanship shown by some students and the improvement in handwriting shown by others.
We are fortunate in having a music supervisor who lives in town and is on call at all times. The musical performances witnessed at the graduation exercises in June, and at the Christmas exercises, are typical of the work done by Mrs. Clapp. A detailed report of music will be found in her report.
The monthly visits of Miss Beitzel, the teacher of nature study under the Audubon Society, are enjoyed

by those in the class. The study of nature and con- servation does much to enrich the science program of the school.
The high light of the year has been the installation of new fluorescent lights in all classrooms. We now not only have the most up-to-date type of lighting in our school, but each child receives on his own printed page the proper amount of illumination. This correct illum- ination has been carefully and scientifically worked out by Mr. Clifton Ewing and Mr. John Putnam, and we owe these two engineers a debt of gratitude for their time and energy. An improvement in work should be a no- ticeable result from having good illumination, and the decrease in eyestrain may keep our pupils from having impaired eyesight at a later date.
During the summer of 1946 Dr. Claire Manwell resigned as school physician. Dr. Herman Felsen of Easthampton was appointed to that post, and regular health examinations have gone on as usual.
On December 10 the members of the Westhampton School Committee were hosts to the school committees of Southampton and Easthampton. Mr. J. Vey Merrill of Westfield Teachers' College spoke on Traditional vs. Modern Education. A very pleasant and instructive meeting was enjoyed by all, and as far as can be learned this was the first purely educational meeting that has ever been held in the school union. The spirit of co- operation and the interest in education by all committees in our union is something to be proud of.
One function of the superintendent of schools is to keep the members of his community informed as to the school program. The annual report, the newspaper, and public performances are some ways to inform parents. The special open-house that was held during National Education Week in November was a success in that many parents and friends visited school to see what the school
