REPORT OF THE
School Committee
To the Citizens of Westhampton :
The committee held a regular meeting each month, with the exception of the month of August; and, also two special meetings. Routine business was discussed and acted upon.
February 4, 1948 the committee attended a joint meeting of School Union No. 3, held at the home of the chairman, J. Arnold Openshaw, in Southampton. The speaker of the evening was Dr. Franklin P. Hawkes, Sup't. of the West Springfield Schools.
April 8, 1948, we attended the annual meeting of the joint school committee, at Easthampton. Mrs. Frary was elected secretary of the School Union for the year 1948-1949.
May 14, 1948 the committee attended a dinner meeting of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, held at the Hotel Northampton. The guest speaker was Dr. Charles F. Phillips, President of Bates College, at Lewiston, Maine.
November 1, 1948 we entertained the joint School Committee of Union No. 3, at a dinner, held at the church parlors, at 7:00 P.M., followed by an education- al movie and business meeting. The dinner was pre- pared and served by the wives of the school committee members and Mrs. Frary.
33
We list, herewith, a summary of our activities for the year, viz :
1. Renewal of the contract for transportation of High and Smith's school students for a period of three years.
2. On the evening of May 21st, we held "Open House" at the school. Even though there was a severe thunder storm and the rain fell in torrents, twenty- seven parents were present, in addition to a number of students, the three teachers, school committee members and their wives and Mr. Dexter. The school committee furnished refreshments of Coca-Cola and assorted home-made cookies.
3. Tuition for "out of town students" was in- creased from $75 to $100 per pupil, effective Septem- ber 8, 1948.
4. Increase of teacher's salaries.
5. New rules set forth by the State Dept. of Edu- cation made it advisable that beginning January, 1949, all "work cards" for children under twenty-one years of age will be issued at the office of Sup't. of Schools, in Easthampton.
6. Purchase of a new steel storage cabinet for use in the principal's room, as well as two up-to-date maps of North America and the World.
7. Entire interior of the schoolhouse was reno- vated. A new ceiling in the rear hall, floors were sanded and refinished and the woodwork and walls painted.
We wish to thank our Superintendent, Mr. Dex- ter, for his untiring effort to help and advise us in car- rying out the duties of the School Department, and his keen interest in the working of our school. He gave
34
so generously of his time during the summer to super- vise the renovating of the schoolhouse. This is also our opportunity to thank all others whose services con- tributed toward making our school a better place to serve our younger citizens.
EDWARD A. MONTAGUE, Chairman ESTELLE E. FRARY, Secretary ELLIS T. HOVER

REPORT OF THE
Superintendent of Schools
It is with pleasure that I submit this, my fourth annual report of the Public Schools of Westhampton. This is the fifty-eight in the series.
The 1948-1949 enrollment for Center School is, as follows :
Pre-primary and Grade 1
11 pupils
Grade 2
6 pupils
Grade 3
6 pupils
Grade 4
4 pupils
Grade 5
11 pupils
Grade 6
7 pupils
Grade 7
9 pupils
Grade 8
11 pupils
TOTAL
65 pupils
Eleven pupils are attending Northampton High School, one pupil is enrolled in Easthampton High School, and three are attending Smith's Agricultural School in Northampton. Eight pupils are attending private and parochial schools. Our present enrollment in elementary and secondary schools is seventy-seven.
Westhampton pupils who are attending North- ampton High School continue to do creditable work there, and good reports come from Smith's Agricul- tural School on the progress of the three pupils who are in attendance there. The pupil attending East- hampton High School is passing all subjects, and word
36
from colleges and other schools of higher learning proves the ability of our pupils to succeed. It is a pleasure to report progress of this nature.
Center School opened in September with no change in faculty. With the exception of the special teacher of the Nature Class under the Audubon So- ciety, all special supervisors and teachers have re- turned. The Audubon class was discontinued last year because of the increased cost. It was thought that a supervisor of art might be obtained, in order that the talents of the pupils be developed, but as yet we have found no one who will do the work for the price we are willing to pay for this service.
I am glad to report that Mr. Rowe attended Hy- annis summer session this past summer, and is earnest- ly working for his master's degree at Boston Univer- sity. He has attended several professional meetings, and has brought back much useful information to the faculty.
