REPORT OF THE School Committee
We have read and approved reports submitted by the Superintendent of Schools, the School Principal, the School Nurse and various Supervisors. These reports outline in detail the activities and school changes which have been reviewed and passed by the School Committee at its regular monthly meetings or one of the special meetings held during the year.
In March 1953 the town of Easthampton withdrew from School Union #2 and immediately employed Union Superintendent of Schools Dexter. Our admission in April to School Union #58, comprised of the towns of Williamsburg, Chesterfield, Worthington and Southamp- ton, with Mr. Lucius Merritt serving as Union Super- intendent of Schools, became effective July 1, 1953. For the months of March, April, May and June Westhamp- ton was officially without a Superintendent of Schools, although both Mr. Dexter and Mr. Merritt were very helpful when problems arose. Mr. Merritt spent many hours of his own time during May and June attending Westhampton School Committee meetings, advising the committee and acquainting himself with our needs.
We are very happy about our new School Union affili- ation and that our administrative problems are in the capable hands of Mr. Merritt.

REPORT OF THE Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee and Citizens of Westhampton :
The report of the Superintendent of Schools is here- with submitted. It is the first report since the forma- tion of the new Union #58.
A significant change took place in the organization of our school union in April. Because Easthampton with- drew from Union #2 at its town meeting in March, it became necessary for Westhampton and Southampton to seek affiliation with some other towns. Application was made to Union :#43 which was made up of the towns of Williamsburg, Chesterfield and Worthington. The school committees of the five towns of Westhampton, South- ampton, Williamsburg, Chesterfield, and Worthington met at the Chesterfield Hotel on April 25, 1953 to decide this question. After a most excellent turkey dinner served by Mrs. Raymond Wisner for the host committee, Chesterfield, several meetings were held that evening. Union #43 invited Westhampton and Southampton to join them in forming a larger school union. This invita- tion was accepted and the new union organized. Mr. Roswell Merritt of Chesterfield was elected chairman and Mrs. Henriette Miller of Westhampton was elected secre- tary. A superintendent was elected for three years and his service divided among the towns. The meeting then adjourned to meet again on the last Saturday in April, 1954 at Westhampton.
This new district should be of benefit to all towns in- cluded in it. The towns are not too different in size and have somewhat similar problems. We have already formed an elementary principals' committee for the six elementary schools. The committee will work with the superintendent to consider and recommend changes in
30
the program. It will study first the social program and then other parts of the curriculum, as well as building and playground management. The recommendations of this committee should be of great value in planning the work of the district. It is one of the ways in which the towns will benefit from this new arrangement.
In getting acquainted with Westhampton, it was a pleasure to find that it had an excellent school committee, a commitee that was sincerely interested in the progress and development of the children under its direction. There was also a fine staff of teachers who were doing excellent work under an excellent program of studies planned by Superintendent William Dexter. These offer- ings were quite complete and included art, music, pen- manship and physical education. It was found to be a well-organized and well-operated school.
During the summer two members of our staff resigned. Mr. Frederick Fedor who had been a most excellent prin- cipal was elected supervisor of elementary schools at Easthampton. This was a fine promotion for him. Miss Edna Graham resigned also as physical education in- structor. She felt that the salary offered was not large enough.
The vacancies caused by the above changes were filled as follows : Mr. Paul M. Rosenberg of Malden was chosen as principal and teacher of grades 6, 7 and 8. Mr. Rosen- berg is a graduate of Boston University and majored in elementary education. He has travelled in Europe and comes to us well prepared for the work required of him. Miss Susan Lawrence of Claremont, Virginia, a gradu- ate of Smith College in 1953, was secured for the physi- cal education instruction. Miss Lawrence is majoring in this field.
