REPORT OF THE CENTER CEMETERY

Routine care of the cemetery consisted of raking up leaves and other debris. Then surplus soil was removed from winter burials and sunken graves were filled in.

Regular mowing consumed most of my time in the sum- mer. The entire cemetery was mowed seven times. Each time requires about nineteen hours of work except when grass is hand trimmed around monuments.

Improvement work was limited to some regrading near the back fence at a low spot, straightening up of nine head- stones in the old section of the cemetery, the cutting of brush and briers in the new addition, and the trucking in and spreading of twenty-four yards of gravel on the roadways.

In the Fall, leaves were raked up and burned or stirred and scattered by the wind.

There were eight burials this year.

Five new lots were acquired by families in town.

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

At the March meeting, the Westhampton School Com- mittee was happy to welcome Mrs. Margaret Hayes as its new member. Mr. Harold Wood was elected as chairman and Mrs. Winifred Hurd was elected secretary.

The regular meetings of the School Committee are held on the third Thursday of each month at the Westhampton Center School.

The school has lost two of its faculty this year. After two years of service, the resignation of Mrs. Priscilla Phillips was accepted with regret. Mrs. Rochelle Lee Wynne of North Adams was employed to fill the vacancy left by Mrs. Phillips. In December, Mr. Donald Franciosi asked to have his re- signation accepted so that he could accept a position in Fitch- burg. We regret losing Mr. Franciosi but we were very fortun- ate, at this time of year, in securing Mr. William Roberts from South Hadley as a replacement. We wish to welcome Mr. William Roberts to our staff.

The Westhampton School Committee acted as host at the annual dinner meeting of School Union 51, held in April at the Westhampton Church.

Contracts for all bus routes were awarded to Mr. Walter R. Witherell.

The contract to deliver fuel oil to the Center School was awarded to the Cernak Fuel Company.

Mrs. Winifred Hurd was elected as representative from the School Committee to the Regional Planning Board.

Because of the steady increase in our school enrollment, the class room of the first and second grade has become over- crowded. To relieve this condition, the School Committee contacted several town and church committees to see if space could be found in another building for one of the grades.

At town meeting, it was voted to let us use the large room in the Town Hall for our first grade. We had a class for our first grade for one half day from March until June. Mrs. Andrews of Southampton was employed as the teacher. Trans- portation was provided for the children to and from the hall. While this arrangement was far from ideal, the School Com- mittee felt the students benefited greatly.
