Containing
Alphabetical Section (page 145). Gives names, occupations and addresses of all men and women eighteen years old or over and all business houses. Dates of deaths during the previous year are given, and where possible, the addresses of people who have moved to other cities. The names of partners in firms are given in this department (the wife's name being in parentheses) also incorporated companies and their officers with much other information that cannot be found elsewhere.
Classified Business Directory (page 97). All business houses, individuals in busi- ness for themselves and professional men are listed without charge under the heading that best describes them. The more progressive houses, realizing that it pays to be easily found, pay a nominal charge for special listings in heavy type, under every heading where a buyer might look for them, cross-indexed to a descriptive space in the "reference section."
Buyers' Guide (page 49). Where more information than is possible to give under the headings is placed on file for buyer's reference. The value of this department cannot be estimated. It is an index of the best business interests of the city, and stands for them and the city in reference libraries all over the country, as well as on the desks of progressive business men. It is accessible to everybody, and the logical place to look for specific information. This probably explains why no other form of publicity is so generally endorsed by business men, as a glance at this department will show.
Street, House and Home Owners Directory (Pink Section) (page 529). A complete list of Streets, showing location of intersecting streets, and enabling one to tell at once between what streets a given number lies, and the quickest way to get there. All Householders and Places of Business are arranged in numerical order upon their respective Streets. The Streets are arranged in alphabetical order.
The symbol (4) preceding the name, denotes that there is a telephone at that address.
A VALUABLE FEATURE: HOMES OWNED BY OCCUPANTS INDICATED BY SYMBOL®
(Note: this information is as given to our canvassers, and is not guaranteed by us. It should be of value as an indication, but not taken as legal proof of title.)
Map (opposite). The clearest map ever made of the city, on a scale large enough to see and small enough to be handled easily.
Miscellaneous Information (page 13). Organization of City Departments, giving officers-Post Office branches-Parcel Post zones and rates-Institutions, etc., with officers-Courts-Population tables-Calendar, etc.

Information
in the mass seems like a dull proposition, but when we have a need of some person or thing nothing interests us more than getting infor- mation about that person or thing.
This directory looks like a big book to be walked around or fallen over or put out of the way, until you need some information that it con- tains-then it becomes the handiest thing around the place.
Has is ever occurred to you how much infor- mation you could get from this book, if you really knew how to use it.
There is a great mass of information here, ar- ranged in a logical way that experience has shown most easily referred to. It does take a little study to know how to make full use, how- ever, like anything else worth while.
A little study that opens up a new way to save time or increase accuracy is an asset to anyone. It may be you will find a lot of information you did not know was here before, that you would have spent a lot of time and trouble to find in other ways, and you will have increased your efficiency just that much. In buying, in selling, in shipping, correspondence, granting credit, sending bills, collecting money-

INTRODUCTION
R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of more than 750 city, county, state and national Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1939 edition of the Waltham City Directory.
Confidence in the growth of Waltham's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Direc- tory is a mirror truly reflecting Waltham to the world.
The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S Directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an un- rivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co-opera- tion of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Waltham Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
Population
The population of Waltham in 1935, when the State Census was taken was 40,557.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-
THE MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 13 to 37 on white paper, presents lists of city, county, state and federal officials; post office, public school and fraternal organization Directories; statistical review; historical sketch; and manufacturing, trade and civic surveys.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 145 to 528, on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Waltham, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and cor- poration in the city.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 529 to 637. In this section the names of the streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. A feature of this section is the designation of tenant-owned homes.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE is included in pages 49 to 96, on India paper, and contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Waltham. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive com- munity like Waltham, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 97 to 141, on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and in- dispensable calalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium. 2

Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Waltham.
The Waltham Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Waltham City Direc- tory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 475 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assur- ance that it will bring a commensurate return.
