75 year's OF SERVING AMERICAN BUSINESS

THE year 1945 is the seventy-fifth Anniversary for R. L. Polk & Co. Three-quarters of a century of Service to cities and industries of America.

WE HAVE grown a lot in seventy-five years, and we plan to keep on growing. We feel younger than ever. Our real future still is ahead of us .. . because the real future of our Country lies ahead.

IN 1870 Ralph L. Polk, the Founder of this Company, laid down a fundamental policy of Good Service ... Honest Service. That policy still is basic with us. Our growth in experience, in skill, in size, came about only because we built on that solid old foundation of Service.

So, ON OUR seventy-fifth Anniversary, we thank you for doing business with us . . . for guiding us along the way. We want any and all of our Services to be even more valuable to you in the years to come . . . and we pledge our best efforts to that end.

"The DIRECTORY IS THE COMMON INTERMEDIARY BETWEEN BUYER AND SELLER

AL Polis

INTRODUCTION

R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of more than 750 city; county, state and national Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1945 edition of the Waltham City Directory.

Confidence in the growth of Waltham's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Direc- tory is a mirror truly reflecting Waltham to the world.

The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S Directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an un- rivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co-opera- tion of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Waltham Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.

Five Major Departments The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

THE MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 8 to 30, on white paper, presents lists of city, county, state and federal officials; post office, public school and fraternal organization Directories; statistical review; historical sketch; and manufacturing, trade and civic surveys.

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 33 to 528, on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Waltham, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and cor- poration in the city.

THE BUYERS' GUIDE beginning opposite page 528 and separately paged from 1 to 64, on tinted paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Waltham. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the busi- ness represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of sup- ply. In a progressive community like Waltham, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 529 to 600, on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and in- dispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 601 to 732. In this section the names of the streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. A feature of this section is the designation of tenant-owned homes.

Information

in the mass seems like a dull proposition, but when we have a need of some person or thing nothing interests us more than getting infor- mation about that person or thing.

This directory looks like a big book to be walked around or fallen over or put out of the way, until you need some information that it con- tains-then it becomes the handiest thing around the place.

Has it ever occurred to you how much infor- mation you could get from this book, if you really knew how to use it.

There is a great mass of information here, ar- ranged in a logical way that experience has shown most easily referred to. It does take a little study to know how to make full use, how- ever, like anything else worth while.

A little study that opens up a new way to save time or increase accuracy is an asset to anyone. It may be you will find a lot of information you did not know was here before, that you would have spent a lot of time and trouble to find in other ways, and you will have increased your efficiency just that much. In buying, in selling, in shipping, correspondence, granting credit, sending bills, collecting money --

Consult Your Directory Accurate Information is worth all it costs
