THE SOUTH BURYING GROUND
1281934
March 8 1779, the town voted to set off 2 acres of land, one in the north part of the town, and one in the south part of the town for burying grounds.
In 1780 Samuel Kingsley 3d. offered to give the town a piece of land in the south part of the town for a burying ground provided the town would build and maintain a suitable fence around it and assume all responsibility for any damage which might arise from lack of suitable fence.
The town voted to accept Mr. Kingsley's offer and a cemetery was accordingly located on the north side of the highway just west of the brook that crosses the highway some 30 rods or so west of Samuel Kingsleys (where in 1873 Lester T. Langdon lived and where now[1939] lives )
This cemetery was used for many years and was once close to the highway but the highway was changed about 1858 and now runs several rods south of the old cemetery. About 1866 the bodies in this cemetery were exhumed and carried over to the cemetery now in use in Westhampton center which was laid out about 1790.
A bank wall which runs along the line of the old, disused, but still traceable highway, is about all now left to mark the exact locality of the old south part graveyard donated by Mr. Kingsley.

A BRIEF HISTORY.
The burials in Westhampton in its earliest days seem to have been made in only three places .- not scattered over the fars and through the neighborhood, as in the case of some pioneer settlements. An action taken by the town in 1779 implies that one burial-ground in the south part of the town had already been in use for some time. The action of the town follows:
March 8, 1779 -e Voted, that the town will procure two acres of land -* the one in the north, the other in the south part of the town -- for the purpose of burying-places. Voted, that the place that has been used in the south part of the town be continued for that purpose. Voted, that Capt. William Bartlett, Jonathan Clark, Seth Burk, Zachariah Curtis and Aaron Thayer be a committee to procure the places above mentioned.
The south burying-ground referred to in this action was located a little west of Babcock's Corners, now (1937) the Matthew Rice place, on the north side of the road. The first burial here is not certainly know. In later years, the ground was given up, and the remains removed to the Center Cemetery. The approximate date of their removal is given in a letter from Amoret Judd Lyman to her sister, Harriet A. Judd in Springfield. The letter was dated November 2, 1866 [Friday], and reads : "This week she [Mrs. John A. Judd, mother of Amoret and Harriet] has been very much interested in the moving of the bodies and the stones from the south yard to this one."
Some of the stones may, parhaps, have been placed in other parts of the yard, but most of them were placed at the back and form part of Row No. 31.

The North burying-ground, which was laid out pursuant to the above action, was located about one and one-quarter miles to the northeast of the center near the farm where in 1879 Sylvester King lived, now (1937) occupied by John Hathaway. Only a few burials were made there, and the two remaining stones, - those of Dorcas, wife of Reuben Wright, and their daughter, Dorcas A .- were removed from the abandoned ground to the Center Cemetery in April 1936.
The cemetery at the Center was authorized by the following action:
Dec.6, 1790 -- Voted, that the committee heretofore chosen to seek a place for a burying-ground be directed and empowered to purchase a piece of ground of the Rev. Enoch Hale and Mr. Jared Hunt for the purpose above mentioned, and to take deed for the same in behalf of the town.
Bounds of the new burying-ground in Westhampton, lying on the east side of the highway that leads from Mr. Hale's to Mr. Samuel Kingsley's, about 30 rods south of Mr. Hale's dwelling-house: one-half of said burying-ground, lying on the south side of the divid- ing-line between Mr. Hale and Mr. Jared Hunt, taken out of Mr. Hale's land, and the other half, on the north side of said line, out of Mr. Hunt's land, -- being 16 rods in length on the above said highway, and 15 rods to the cast parallel to the above line, and containing in the whole one acre and a half.
This tract has been enlarged three times. In 1851, the area of the original tract was extended back five rods toward the east, by the purchase of land from Augustus E. Hale. In 1880, the New Part, a tract thirteen rods in width, was added along the south side. In 1897 was purchased the small plot, thirty feet square, at the northwest corner of the cemetery on which the tool-house stands. The two last-named tracts were purchased from the heirs of Nathan Burt.
The Damon family established a private burial-place near their old homestead in the northwest part of the town, and
1
---
several stones may still be found there. Their records can be found in Part 4 of this book.
Some members of the Hayden family were buried originally upon their farm. The remains, however, were removed to Chester- field many years ago.
The Center Cemetery is, therefore, the only burying-ground now in use in the town. The first burial in this ground was that of John Parsons who died March 23, 1791, although stones bearing dates earlier than this can be found among those brought here from the old south burying-ground. Near the front entrance of the original part stands a tall brownstone shaft erected soon after the close of the Civil War to the memory of those who fell in that struggle. It bears the inscription:
"Erected by the Town of Westhampton in grateful remembrance of her brave and patriotic soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defense of liberty and union during the Great Rebellion."
This cemetery is in good condition and is excellently cared for, and it contains some fine monuments of more recent years as well as the quaint low stones of the earlier days.
