PREFACE
In America we have no established nobility; there is no titled Peerage. Our stations in life are based on the record of personal achievement. This way, giving rank to man through his abilities, is typically and peculiarly American. To an American, his ante- cedents may well be of pleasurable or historical interest, but they do not give him rank in the eyes of his fellow countrymen. His countrymen ask rather "What has he done?"
Perhaps the first collection of great biographies, Roman, was "Plutarch's Lives." A thousand years later, the powerful Feudal Barons of England combined the most distinguished lists of their period when they inscribed their names to the great Magna Charta. Five hundred years later, in Germany, the "Almanach de Gotha," imprinted in 1764, and then "Burke's Peerage" in 1826, set down the distinctions of the outstanding Europeans of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries.
The basis of all noble titles, past and present, has been, in the main, for services given or accomplishments won. The founders of our republic, in their wisdom, saw that a great democracy could not be trusted to "Divine Right" or a hereditary grace, rather it must be put into the hands of those who had service and achieve- ment to offer the nation.
"Who's Who" is truly an untitled nobility that fits the American pattern one hundred percent.
With this in mind, "Who's Who in Massachusetts" is offered as an authoritative, documented, complete, contemporary encyclo- paedia-biography of almost eight thousand of those of this Com- monwealth of Massachusetts who have so distinguished their persons.
