The Free Church 2dea.

American churches are distinguished from the state churches of Europe by their voluntaryism. They rely on the good will of the people. in the exercise of their liberty to support churches or not. as they choose. This grand princi- ple of voluntaryism. which for a while stopped half way. the free churches have arisen to carry out to it - true extent.

The difference between - a tree church " and any other is partly pecuniary and partly social. As to the first named. the free church aims to avoid every thing that looks like selling the Gospel at a price. when God has given it free. It opens its doors as wide as God's call to come and hear, and its seats as wide as its doors. It invites men to give for the support of worship; it obliges none to pay. If one asks, " How much -hall I give?" it returns the Bible answer. " Every man as he is able." It leaves solely to conscience. as God leaves it. to ascertain how much this is. Then, as to the social difference. the free church is one where-as ought to be the case in " God's house " - no right - are offered to one which are not equally within reach of all: where the social discrimina- tions of the world are ignored in the distribution of places and privileges. Both in the pecuniary and social point of view. therefore, the free church stands for that Christian idea of apofity biberon man and man. in all our concerns with God. which the Bible is so full of .- an cquality both in receiving and in giving.

5

It is a pity that a question on which the Christian theory is so clear. should be discussed from the stand-point of prejudice. Except in prejudice and habit. no cause can be found why people should not be satisfied with free sitting- on Sunday's. as at work day meetings. and in hearing sermons. as in lecture room talks and conferences. The private pew-right. with the social discrimination- and inevitable exclusiveness that it involves. is a dead weight ayon the churches in their endeavors to gather in the great unchurched multitudes. While the free sitting and the truckly offering, to the mind of the average church neglecter. present the only method that squares with the church idea of theist'- free grace and free gospel. sufficiently to reint the charge of selfish inconsistency that he perpetually bring - against the prevailing fachion.

A- To the preuniary foa-ibility of the free church theory. it has been demon- -trated again and again. Of course. our worship mutt be inviting. heart- warm, hand- active and cordial. in order to give true -necess to any church. People have only to remember that good thing- never work themselves: they must be worked. The Lord's business. like any other. must be conducted on business principles. Then no one need be afraid of any church failing.

DIRECTORY OF

Families and Individuals composing our Congregation.

This Directory has been prepared to promote acquaintance, and to be it guide in social intercourse. 24

Great care has been taken to make a complete list. Some omissions will never- theless oceny, from the morillingness of individuals. here and there. to respond to all incitations to give their names as members of the congregation.

EXPLANATORY MARKS.

ANNUAL RECORD

OF THE

NORTHI CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF LENN.

No. 5 .- FOR THE YEAR 1873 - 4.

Frents of the Year.

We are glad to make record of a year in which spiritual blessings have not been withheld, although, in material prosperity and financial resources. our Society has felt, in common with others, the pressure of hard times. During this year, eighteen have been added to the church by confession of faith,-a larger number than in any previous year. Our Sabbath School. and our prayer meetings, and fellowship meetings, have been character- ized by an nuwonted degree of interest. It is worthy of note. now, at the end of five years from our organization, that we began with seventy-four members, and have since then received seventy-three.

Owing, however, to the unsettled abode of many of the inhabitants of Lynn, and also, in part, to the lax habits of many in regard to attendance on public worship, our permanent congregation has not increased in the same ratio as the church. At least fifty-five families have been on our list for longer or shorter periods during the last five years, who are no longer connected with us - a number almost equal to the original number (sixty-four) with which we started. During the five years, the net growth of the church has been fifty-eight per cent. ; that of the families belonging to the Sabbath congregation, fifty-nine per cent. ; that of the congregation ac- tually attending upon publie worship, not over eight per cent. at most. It has been our practice from the beginning to make a record of the number present, by actual count, at every service of public worship.

It deserves to be recorded, as an unusual thing, that, from October 4, 1873, to May 19, 1871, there was no death in the congregation.

The Reading Room, of which mention was made in last year's RECORD, has been discontinued.

A Young People's Meeting was commenced in September, 1873. and held every Friday evening in the Chapel Parlor until May. These meet-

ings, designed to bring the young people and the pastor together for fa- miliar conference, were sustained throughout by good numbers and inter- est, and resulted, it is believed. in permanent good.

The reports from home work. which. in former years, were presented monthly at one of our prayer meetings. (called, therefore. the Home Prayer Meeting), have not come in this year with due regularity. It is not well for the church to suffer this good habit of a monthly review to de- cline. Notwithstanding. the work has not declined, on the whole.

The Girls' Sewing School has been carried through another year with no abatement of interest. through the zeal of a few ladies who have regu- larly devoted their Wednesday afternoons to it. Instead of a prize, as here- tofore, for the best improvement in sewing, the pupils were presented. this year, with the articles which they had made from furnished material.

A Girls' Missionary Circle has been formed during the year, through the zeal of one of our ladies. and a social entertainment, with a sale of the articles made at their semi-monthly meetings, has realized aboat $40 for missionary uses. A large quilt. the product of the Girls' Sewing School. went into the same treasury.

The Ladies' Sewing Society, declining, on account of objections to lot- teries, to join in a union fair for the benefit of the Old Ladies' Home. held a sale for that charity in the Chapel Parlor last fall, which realized a con- siderable sum. A contribution of equal amount was also made to the fair in aid of the Woman's Union for Christian Work.

Social entertainments have been enriched, during the year, with dia- logues, tableaux, music, readings and declamations, through the energetic interest taken in that department by a number of ladies and gentlemen.

Benevolent efforts for the needy. wherever these have been discovered, have been active. A school of poor people of color in Camden, S. C., has had a box sent to it, and neighbors at home have not been overlooked. "The Good Words" have been circulated from house to house through our city distriet by monthly visitors as heretofore.

We desire to set up our memorial this year also, that " hitherto the Lord hath helped us." As we look back, and look forward, we " thank God and take courage."
