Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10

In the war of 1812, and the invasion of Mexico, the in- habitants of Brookline took no very enthusiastic part, believing that war could have been averted in both instances by suitable diplomacy. Whether they were right it is still difficult to decide, but there were not wanting among her citizens men who served the country with honor to them selves, the town, and a long list of chivalrous ancestors.

In 1849, August 24th, died the Rev. John Pierce, D. D., having filled the pastoral of his church fifty-two years. As the first historian of Brookline, he left little of interest to the general reader to be compiled by those who should come after him. His memory is still cherished by those who

OF THE TOWN OF BROOKLINE.

knew him, and the hand of a stranger could add no eulogium to the many that have sprung from the hearts that knew and loved him.

In the last war with our misguided brethren, Brookline, as in the past, gave freely of life and treasure to the cause on which the destinies of the world doubtless depended, and the liberties of men of whatever race or color. The limits of this sketch have already been reached, nor has the time come when men can calmly and justly estimate the events of the last decade, and the character and deservings of those who figured therein. A writer to whom we acknowledge much indebtedness for pictures of local life and manners, has already done all that justly may be accomplished, - the com- pilation of a list of those who, through battle and sickness, were true to the land of their fathers, and have, as we trust, reaped the reward of their martyrdom.

We have briefly traced the past of the the Town of Brook- line, and seen how the primeval forest became first a scat- tered settlement, then a little hamlet, and finally an indepen- dent hamlet. The first Directory of Brookline draws near its completion. A stranger may be pardoned for wondering if it will prove to be the last.
