SELECTMEN ARE AGAINST CENTER-STREET GARAGE

*** It Was Graceful, But I Didn't Have a Look+In," Says Merchant.

The Board of Selectmen, acting in auavest manner, gave Elmer E. Gray of 195 St. Paul Street leave to withdraw on "hus petition lor a ramoline license for a proposed garage at 16 to 22 Center Street, Coolidge Corner, after a public hearing in the Selectmen's Room in the Town Hall, Monday afternoon. More than sixty property owners, most of them women, were present, prepared to object. The Selectmen, however, rendered their deci- aion without hearing anyone in opposi- tion to the plan and without conferring together alter Mr. Gray had finished presenting has ade of the case. Judge In S. Park Philip S. Parker, chairman of the Board, presided at the hearing, but took no part in the decision, as he stated that he was agent for a near-by property.

BLANCHARD NOT TO RUN

SCHOOL BOARD TO LOSE ANOTHER MAN

Charles F. Wend Has Been Persuaded to Be Candidata -

Dr. Benjamin S. Blanchard, who is Just finishing bis first three-year term us a member of the School Board and who had already signified to the Town Clerk his intention of being . candidate lor re-election, announced Wednesday morning that he has decided not to run. Charles F. Weed, president of the Boston Cham- ber of Commerce, will be a candidate for election to the Board. Frederick P. Fish and Henry B. Sawyer are among the men responsible for persuading Mr. Werd to consent to be a candidate

De. Blanchard in announcing his with. drawal from the board wad that he probe ably would beve stuck'to his original intention of being a candidate f election if he had not heard that Mr. Weert was willing to run. Dr. Blanchard sud that he believed his retirement in favor of Mr. Weed would be to tha advantage of the board. Dr. Blanchard mid that be ran there would undoubtedly be several other "candidates, whereas he believed Mr. Weed would be uaopposed. The withdrawal of Dr. Blanchard follows within a week the resignation of Homer Albers. Mr. Albers mill tad two more years to serve, but be had said some time ago that he might be unable to complets his term.

Mr. Gray was encouraged by the Board to present his case in full. He did to. Judge Parker then asked for a show of hands as to how many people present were against the granting of the petition. Every hand went up except Mr. Gray's Judge Parker then announced that the Board had no desire to hear anyone in opposition, as it was unanimously opposed to the granting ol the petition. A storm of feminine applause broke out which caused Judge Parker some trouble to Quell. As Mr. Gray said after the hearing was over: "It was very gracelul, but I didn't have a look-in, did T?", Mr. Gray, how- ever, took the delest of his plan in good part. "I feel all right about it, " be sak ".There really was strong opposition to the plan, much stronger than I had any idea of. As far as't could see the board acted in an impartial manner. It is evidently very hard for Center Street residents to get used to the idea that business is ca- crosching on thet district. I still leel that it is not accommodating to the people who would welcome another garage in that jection not to let one be built there." One of the women was heard to say as she was leaving the room after the hear- ing. "If Mr. Gray thinks a garage improves property, why doesn't he build one on bus own street?"

All Saints Church will be the scene of a large wedding at 1.30 o'clock this alter. noon, when Muss Natalie E. Dorr, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Webster Ryder Dore of 1382 Beacon Street, is to be married to Mr Herbert Carruth Pope ol Ashmont. The ceremony will be performed by Rev. Dr. D. D. Addison, rector of the church. A luncheon at the home of the bride's

parents will follow the church service. Mr. and Mrs. Pope are to spend their honeymoon in Cuba. The matron-of- honor at tha wedding is to be Mrs. Robert S. Jowett, and Mr. Arnold W. Pope, a brother of the bridegroom, will be best man. The ushers will include Mr. Robert S. Jowett, Mr. Franklin King, Mr. Francia B. Holmes, and Dr. Frank H. Lahey.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

TO ASK. FOR #27,000

Mr. Gray's arguments in favor of the proposed garage were that another gar age was needed in that section of the town to take care of cars that now had to he put up in Boston and Commonwealth Avenue garages, that Center Screet was rapidly deteriorating as a residential district, and that has garage would be a frit-class
