CHURCHES

1944-BROOKLINE DIRECTORY-1944

The Churches

WITH A TOTAL OF TWENTY CHURCHES, representing the leading denominations, Brook- line is well represented in its Religious Institutions

These noble edifices placed at intervals about the city add much to its attractiveness and charm.

It is the belief of many Brookline citizens of vision that this full and adequate supply of churches is one of the greatest of the many resources of our city.

That for newcomers it is a factor that makes for the ready assimilation into the religious and social life of the com- munity and hastens the time required to make citizens of the strangers who come to us.

The Church of today is the greatest of all institutions for the planting of good thoughts in the minds of the people and stands as the bulwark against the degrading in- fluences that surround us.

Therefore let us give a thought to these institutions that form so great a part of our city life and in visualizing our future greatness, let us remember their value as

A Factor for Progress

Church of Christ

416 WASHINGTON ST. BROOKLINE, MASS.

"That They May All Be One"

These words are from the prayer which Jesus voiced on the night of his betrayal on the behalf of his disciples and of those should believe through their word.

Here is a desire of our Master which the imminent shame and suffering of the cross could not eclipse-the desire for the unity-the perfect fellowship of His people.

The very purpose of His death according to Paul in the Ephesian letter was to abolish the existing barriers be- tween men and unite all "in one body by the cross." (Eph 2: 11-16)

The most obvious implication of His great revelation of the Fatherhood of God is the brotherhood of man.

The violation of this brotherhood, the failure to achieve this holy fellowship for which He so earnestly prayed and which was the object of His death is the un- thinkable sin of professed Christendom.

We propose a return to the spirit and the letter of New Testament Christianity as the valid basis of the unity of all believers in Jesus Christ. We plead that men be only Christians in the fullest and highest implication of that name. We desire fellowship with all men in the church of His love which He bought with His blood.

Let all men who believe in Christ unite. Let all"speak the same thing." A dying world needs His message not a "Babel"-or confusion of tongues.

God alone cannot answer the prayer of His son; but believers can answer His prayer.

Associate Ministers: HAROLD THOMAS, THOMAS N. PAGE, LeMOINE G. LEWIS
