TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT

MDCCCLI

NEWBURYPORT : WILLIAM H. HUSE & CO., PRINTERS, 42 STATE STREET. 1876.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.

IN BOARD OF DIRECTORS, Nov. 29th, 1875. ORDERED, That the Report of the Committee on Library be accepted and the names of the members of this board appended thereto, and the same be transmitted to the City Council, agreeably to the requirements of section 5th, of the ordinance concerning the Public Library.

Attest,

H. A. TENNEY, Secretary.

DIRECTORS' REPORT.

The Directors of the Public Library, in accordance with the requisitions of the fifth section of the ordi- nance concerning the City Library, would respect- fully report as follows :

The annual examination of the books in the Li- brary shows that its condition at this time compares favorably with that of former years. There is, gen- erally, only the usual amount of wear, indicated by the soiled covers, or an occasional starting of the leaves of some of the books.

The greatest amount of wear is of course found in the books on the shelves devoted to fiction and travels, where some of the most popular publications are so constantly in use, that even with careful usage they become comparatively soon worn and dilapi- dated. On this account, during the past year, in this department, forty volumes purchased from the income of the Sawyer Fund have been substituted for those which were worn out; and in the opinion of the Librarian should the same number be replaced during the coming year, it would only serve to meet a much needed requirement.

4 .

The examination which has just been concluded, shows five volumes to be missing from the shelves since the last report. Some of these will no doubt yet be returned; as it often occurs that books miss- ing in former years, are subsequently found and re- turned to their places on the shelves, or the loss is made good by the payment of their value. The ex- action of a fine for books that are kept beyond their allotted time, operates favorably in regard to their prompt return.

A detailed statement of the condition of the Li- brary is given in the certificate of the Examiner, which accompanies this report.

At the commencement of the present year, the Library contained 15,635 volumes. The accessions since that time amount to 583 volumes. The whole number now belonging to the Library is 16,218. The books added during the past year were received from the following sources, namely: purchased from the income of the Peabody Fund, 303; from the Sawyer Fund, 172; and 106 by donation.

In the early part of the present year, a collection of twenty or more volumes, chiefly of an antiquarian character, and having a relation to this city, either by authorship or its being their place of publication, was received from Major Ben: Perley Poore. The mo- tive of Major Poore in making this donation, was to lay the foundation for an alcove of books, whose au- thors, printers, or publishers, were natives of New- buryport. The donation was accepted by the Direc- tors, and on motion of Rev. Dr. Spalding, it was

" Voted, That this Board express to Major BEN: PERLEY POORE, its sense of appreciation and approval of his design."

Through the liberality of the City Council, the

5

Library is in receipt of the amount received from last year's dog tax, which has been added to the fund for a new catalogue. The whole sum now on deposit for that purpose, in the Institution for Savings, is $2581 .- 85. A catalogue of the accessions of the past year is being prepared, and will be ready for printing with the Directors' report.

Four hundred and ninety-three names of new sub- scribers to the rules and regulations have been added during the year, by persons who have thus obtained access to the privileges of the Library.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE BUILDING FUND.

TO THE DIRECTORS OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY:

Iu pursuance of the terms of the trust by which an annual report is to be made to the Directors of the Library, the Trustees would respectfully state that the fund at this date amounts to ($6181.93) six thousand one hundred and eighty-one and 93-100 dollars, which is on deposit with the Institution for Savings in Newburyport and vicinity. The principal of the fund of five thou- sand dollars cannot be withdrawn only on the written order of a majority of the board. During the year and since the last report, there has been ex- pended from the accrued interest eight hundred sixty-six 68-100 dollars. A new floor has been laid in the library-room and vestibule, the fence has been rebuilt, and a granite base erected extending the entire front of the land on State street.

EDWARD S. MOSELEY, - CALEB CUSHING, TRUSTEES. JOSHUA HALE, S

NEWBURYPORT, Dec. 1st, 1875.

REPORT OF THE TREASURER OF THE PEABODY FUND.

The treasurer of the fund created by Mr. George Peabody, in the letter which prescribed the conditions of the gift, is required to prepare and publish for the information of the public an annual report, of its condition and the income received during the year.

The treasurer accordingly makes known that the principal of the fund is fifteen thousand dollars, and is deposited with the Institution for Savings in Newburyport and its vicinity, and cannot be withdrawn except upon the written order of the trustees of the fund.

The income during the year and since the last report has been nine hundred and seventy-five dollars, of which three hundred and ninety-five 50-100 dol- lars remains unexpended,

The expenditures have been made in adding 303 volumes of standard books to the library and in paying the salary of the superintendent of the Public Reading Room.

It is due to the memory of Mr. Peabody, in making this annual report, to express at the same time the obligations the community are under to his mu- nificence, as the most valuable additions to the Library are made from the® fund which he has thus endowed.

Newburyport, December 1, 1875.

REPORT OF THE TREASURER OF THE TODD FUND.

The Treasurer received in July from Mr. William C. Todd, his annual con- tribution of three hundred dollars, for the purpose of maintaining a Public Reading-room in connection with the Public Library. Of this amount one hundred eighty-seven 31-100 dollars have been expended in subscriptions to newspapers for the year ending July 1, 1876, and to magazines to the first of January next.

The salary of the superintendent has been paid, as in past years, from the Peabody Fund.

The superintendent reports an increasing interest in the Reading-room. More than a thousand names are recorded of those who at times avail of its advantages, and its influence is most salutary.

EDWARD S. MOSELEY, Treasurer. Newburyport, Dec. 1, 1875.

EXAMINER'S REPORT.

TO THE COMMITTEE ON LIBRARY :- GENTLEMEN :

The undersigned, selected to examine the books of the Public Library, has attended to his duties and submits the following report :

The condition of the books is good, so good that great credit must be conceded to the Librarian for a constant care over and attention to their condition, as the volumes, in the nature of things, could not be as they were found on the shelves, without such care and attention, when we consider how great the wear must be to which they are subjected from year to year.

More or less books are somewhat worn, and shattered, from their constant use, especially some in alcove A-which is made up of the light literature of the day, and from which there is a constant drain-but no volumes were found upon the shelves that are not suitable to remain there and be taken from the Library for some time to come.

The volumes in the Peabody alcoves are in an excellent condition, and none missing.

The following books have been lost since the last examination :

In Trust, or Dr. Bertrand's Household. A. M. Douglass.

Fern Leaves. First Series.

Round the World in Eighty Days. St. Giles and St. James. D. Jerrold. Bible Biography.
