BROMFIELD FUND.


To the Hon. Mayor and Board of Aldermen,


GENTLEMEN : The committee on this fund would respectfully submit the following report, viz:


The fund amounting to $10,000 is invested in an annuity, in trust, policy No. 2799, of the Massachusetts Hospital Life Insur- ance Co., the income from which is payable annually on the first day of January of each year. The amount received from this source the past year was $425, of which $423.99 was expended on trees and sidewalks, in accordance with the will of the donor, leaving a balance of $1.01 to be carried to the next year's account.


The committee were unanimously in favor of devoting a larger portion of the fund to the trimming and care of trees now growing, than has been done in previous years, and they would recommend that such a course be taken for the year ensuing.

SAWYER FUND.


To His Honor the Mayor and Board of Aldermen,


GENTLEMEN: The committee on the Sawyer fund would respect- fully report that the bequest under the will of the late Matthias Plant Sawyer, of Boston, amounting to the sum of five thousand dollars, held in trust for the benefit of the public library of the city of Newburyport, is now invested in a promissory note of the city of Newburyport bearing date April 18, 1879, with interest at the rate of four and one-half (4 1-2) per cent per annum. Said note is now in the custody of the city clerk for safe keeping.

GENTLEMEN : The committee on this fund would respectfully submit the following report, viz : That under the provisions of the will of the late Margaret Atwood, the city of Newburyport is en- titled to a certain proportion of the annual income of the funds held in trust by Albert W. Greenleaf, esq., trustee by appointment from the probate court for Essex county.


The income from said fund paid over to your committee the past year amounted to $384.88, and the same was placed in the hands of the overseers of the poor, and their account of the manner in which it was distributed is incorporated in their annual report.

BROWN FUND.


To His Honor the Mayor and Board of Aldermen,


GENTLEMEN : The committee on the Brown fund would respect- fully report that the fund donated for the purpose of maintaining a grammar school in the city of Newburyport amounts to fifteen thousand ($15,000) dollars, and is now invested in a promissory note of the city of Newburyport dated April 18, 1879, and bearing inter- est at the rate of four and one-half (4 1-2) per cent per annum. Said note is now in the hands of the city clerk for safe keeping.

GENTLEMEN : The Committee on Putnam Fund to whom was referred the statement of investments, submitted to this Board by the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the Putnam Free School, would respectfully report that they find the Fund, on the first of May, 1879, amounted to $50,000, invested as follows :

ATKINSON FUND.

GENTLEMEN : The Committee on Atkinson Fund would respect- fully report, that upon a careful investigation of the facts relating to the present condition of this Fund and the purposes to which the

the income thereof is annually devoted, they find that " At a meet- ing in the School District No. 2 of the town of Newbury, April 8th, 1850, it was voted to apply to the Legislature for an Act appoint- ing Trustees to take charge of the Atkinson Fund. A committee was chosen, consisting of Josiah Little, David Brown and Andrew Miltimore, to carry this vote into effect."


May 24, 1851, the General Court of Massachusetts enacted, Chap- ter 347, of the Special Laws and Resolves, from which the following cxtracts are taken :--


Chapter 347, Acts of 1851.


SEC. 1. Josiah Little, Andrew W. Miltimore, and David Brown, and their successors, are hereby made a corporation, by the name of the Trustees of the Atkinson School Fund, to be established in the city of Newburyport, with all the powers and privileges, and subject to all the restrictions and limitations set forth in the forty-fourth chapter of the Revised Statutes, with the liberty of holding and managing real and personal estate, the net income of which shall not exceed one thousand dollars, to be applied exclusively to the purpose of education, in conformity with the provisions of the will of Moses Atkinson, late of Newbury, deceased, and in that part of the city of Newburyport, which was heretofore the second school district in said Newbury.


SEC. 3. The Mayor and Aldermen of the city of Newburyport shall be the visitors of said fund, and see to the rightful application of it, according to the provisions of the Act, and they shall have the power of removing any of said trustees, for good canse, and vacancies occurring therein may be filled by the surviving members, subject to the approval or rejection of said Mayor and aldermen.


The trustees at the present time are William J. Currier, chair- man, Benjamin Hale and Joshua Hale, the last named gentleman being also treasurer and clerk.


The rules and regulations adopted by the Trustees require an an- nual report to be made to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen, in the month of April.

school was continued for 41 evenings, under able and experienced teachers, the average attendance being about 37.

ATKINSON COMMON.


To His Honor the Mayor and the City Council,


GENTLEMEN : The commissioners of Atkinson Common would re- port that last spring an avenue 30 feet wide was laid out from Moseley avenue into the common ; also, an avenue 20 feet wide all around the common, about one rod from its bounds. About fifty maple trees were planted upon Moseley avenue and the avenues near the en- trance. Much of the common has been ploughed, smoothed, and planted with grass seeds. The expense of these improvements was paid from the rent of the common for 1878, thirty ($30) dollars, and from the income for 1878 from the land given for improvements, six ($6) dollars, from the fund in the hands of the city treasurer the sum of forty-two ($42) dollars, and by appropriation from the city government. The rent of the land opposite for 1879 was ten ($10) dollars, part of which has been paid in labor. The hay from the common for 1879 has been paid for in part by labor upon the com- mon.
