GENTLEMEN : The overseers of the poor to whom is committed a general oversight, and care of the poor, in all of its departments, would respectfully submit their twenty- second annual report.
GENERAL STATEMENT
The total cost of the poor department for the year end- ing November 30, 1900, has been $25,552.85. This in- cludes $9, 135.91 paid for the support of insane, $2102.23 for fuel, $300 for medicine and $450 for physicians salary.

The increase in the expenditures over last year, is due to the large number of insane patients whose settlement is in this city, and whose board the city is responsible, also, owing to the destruction of the almshouse barn, all hay and produce being destroyed, necessitated purchasing what in former years, we have had to sell.

OVERSEERS OF THE POOR
ALMSHOUSE
The almshouse during the past year has continued un- der the care of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Nelson, one or more of the overseers visiting the farm every week.
An average of 40 persons have resided in the alms- house during the year at an average cost of $2.29 each per week.
January 1, 1901, inmates at the almshouse 20 males, whose average age is 66 years ; 16 of American birth, 4 of foreign birth; 15 females whose average age is 58 years, II American born, 4 foreign born.
A new, large and commodious barn has been erected during the past year at a cost of $5,431.34, which is $431.34 in excess of the amount received from the insur- ance company upon the loss by fire.
INSANE
The cost to the city during the past year has increased $1,022.90 and will probably increase to a large amount during the coming year and no relief from this great bur- den can be realized until January 1, 1904, when the state will assume the expense of all the insane.
There are now at Danvers asylum 37 persons, Medfield IO, Westborough 2, Taunton I, Northampton I, Foxboro I, Worcester 3, feeble-minded school 2, private family I, making 58 insane in the asylumns on January 1, 1901, who are supported wholly or in part by the city.
OUTSIDE RELIEF
Outside relief which last year was granted to 393 persons this year has been granted to 336 persons and are classed as follows : 236 having a settlement in Newburyport, 66 having a settlement in other places and 34 having no set- tlement in the state, making a total of 336 persons who have been assisted during the past year.

To the Overseers of the Poor :
GENTLEMEN : - I herewith submit the annual report of the city physician for the year December 31st, 1900.
During the last year I have made at the home of the pa- tients 1476 visits, at the almshouse 26 visits and at the police station 25 visits. I have also received at' my office 352 patients, making a total of 1879 patients seen. Have been present at 14 births, 5 males and nine females.

The products of the city farm during the past year were 25 tons of hay, 125 bushels corn, 250 bushels onions, 360 cabbages, 275 bushels potatoes, 105 bushels turnips, 75 bushels beets, 60 bushels carrots, 25 tons ensilage, 30 bar- rels apples, 10 bushels beans and green corn, peas, toma-

toes and string beans enough to supply the almshouse with all they needed.
875 pounds butter have been made and 3000 pounds of hogs have been dressed.
All the labor on the farm has been performed by the in- mates of the almshouse under the direction of the superin- tendent.

REPORT OF ATWOOD AND DEXTER FUNDS
To His Honor the Mayor and the City Council of the City of Newburyport ;
GENTLEMEN : The board of overseers of the poor to whom is entrusted the income accruing from these funds, would respectfully report that the income from the Dexter fund for the year ending December 31, 1900 amounting to $9000, has been divided among the three overseers, $3000 each.
The income from the Atwood fund $307.50, has been divided in a similar manner, giving $102.50 to each over- seer, and has been distributed according to the will of the donors in the following manner :

uted among 19 persons in sums from $1 to $3, leaving noth- ing on hand of this fund at the close of the year.
In wards three and four the $30 of the Dexter fund, nothing remaining over from last year, has been distribu- ted among 11 persons in sums from $1 to $3 each, leaving nothing on hand of this fund at the close of the year.
In wards five and six the $30 of the Dexter fund has been distributed among 17 persons in sums from $1 to $2 each, leaving nothing on hand of this fund at the close of the year.
ATWOOD FUND
In wards one and two the'income fromthe Atwood fund $100.89 with $89.71 remaining on hand at the close of last year, $190.60 has been distributed amon 51 persons in sums from $1 to $5 each, leaving $75.21 on hand of this fund at the close of the year.
In wards three and four the income from the Atwood fund $100.89 with $53.62 remaining on hand from last year, $154.51 has been distributed among 51 persons in sums from $1 to $5 each, leaving $33.54 on hand of this fund at the close of the year.
In wards five and six the income from the Atwood fund $100.89 with $82.37 on hand at the close of last year $183.26 has been distributed among 30 persons in sums from $1 to $5 each, leaving $80.68 on hand of this fund at the close of the year.
At the close of the year December 31, 1900, there re- mained in the hands of the overseers.

Chief Engineer of the Fire Department
HEADQUARTERS FIRE DEPARTMENT, CENTRAL STATION, NEWBURYPORT, DEC. 31, 1900. To His Honor the Mayor and Gentlemen of the City Council :
In compliance with the requirements of the city ordi- nance governing the fire department of the city, I herewith submit to you my sixth annual report of the condition and the work performed by this department for the year ending December 31, 1900, together with a list of the members with their rank, age, residence and occupation, location of fire alarm boxes, a statement of receipts and expenses, fires and alarms, losses and insurance as near as could be ascertained, with such suggestions as I think will be ne- cessary for the good of the department.
The department is in good condition and the members are ready and willing to perform the duties assigned them.
