SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

REPORT OF THE TRUANT OFFICER.

Mr. E. L. Willard, Superintendent of Schools:

Dear Sir :- I will present the annual report of the Truant Officer for the year ending June 30, 1913:

Number of schools visited

1454

Number of absences reported by teachers

1825

Number of parents notified 1825

Number of cases of truancy

129

Number of children returned to school

98

Number of factories and stores visited

105

Number of certificates issued 368

Number of children employed contrary to law

29

Number of children brought into court

11

Number of truants returned to school 98

Number of employers warned 19

Number of children convicted

3

Number of children placed on probation

9

Number of other places visited such as theatres

151

Number of factories notified as to non attendance to evening school. 9

Number of illiterate minors notified for not attending evening school 141

In addition to the above work I took a complete census of the school chil- dren between the ages of five and fifteen.

During the year in making my visits to the homes I found a great many cases of poverty which was the cause of a number of children not attending school, especially in the winter time, but through the kindness of Mrs. Lewis, of the Associated Charities, and Mr. Dixon, our City Missionary, and others whom I wish to thank, I was able to have several children attend school which otherwise would not.

Since the first of last May, when the license commenced, the cases for help have increased and I will have considerable more trouble than I did last winter.

As the schools extend over considerable territory, it would facilitate mat- ters if we could have telephones in all the schools, as it is impossible to visit all the schools every day and look up the absentees in connection with my other work that I am obliged to attend.

Respectfully submitted,

EDWARD H. PORTER, Attendance or Truant Officer.
