(1) After the ordination of Mr. Treadwell the church took a wide departure from the teaching of the early days. It sanctioned and adopted what is known as " the half way covenant." Mr. Treadwell, who was a man of spotless character, afterwards abandoned the ministry. He represented Ipswich and then Salem in the legislature - was a Senator from Essex County and a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas.

(2) These children named on the page under the head " Memorandum " were bap- tized by Mr. Treadwell, but propinquity to Wolf Hill and the decline of earnest- ness in the old parish, found them in adult life " attached to Friends' principles."

19. A Town Meeting to Choose Men for to Set in Convention at Faniuell Hall(1)

(1) The town record reads as follows :

"At a town meeting held in Lynn Sept. 19, 1768, Dec'n Daniel Mansfield chose moderator of said meeting.

" The town then proceeded agreeable to ye above notification and chose Eben'r Burrill (by a great majority) to attend a convention at Funnels ITall in Bos- ton on Thursday ye 22d instant to consult just reasonable & proper measures for the securing the Crown and Government : also ye constitutional Rights and Privileges of ye Inhabitants of ye Province which they ought to enjoy by Charter & sc. " Then the meeting was dissolved."

From thence on, the old Book of Records of Lynn, through the period of the Revolution, is full of patriotic votes and measures.

When that book is printed it will be seen that 1.ynn was as vigorous and as earnest as the two seaport " rebel " towns of Boston and Marblehead.

Local affairs sunk into insignificance, and the ways and means of securing in- dependence are set down at length.

Augt. 31. Sept. 8. A Severe Storm of Rain & N.E. Wind which Lasted most of ye Night

(1) These troops held Boston till Washington's occupation of Dorchester Heights compelled the evacuation. March 17, 1776. Lynn's first thought was to hold a special solemn Fast Day in the two parish meeting-houses -" The Old Tunnel " and the West Parish on Saugus green.

The 17th of March is one of the red-letter days of our history, for upon that day the American army accomplished a substantial victory.

Lexington was a chase of a retreating force. Bunker Hill in its immediate re- sult was a defeat, but the evacuation of Boston taught the nations that our people could control themselves and occupy fortified towns by strategy.

There was a collision between the crowd and the troops. The troops fired upon the people. Three were killed, two mortally wounded, and several others injured. The people were greatly excited and exasperated. Theimmediate effect was the removal of the British troops from the Town to the Castle, upon the demand of Samuel Adams.

(1) General Thomas Gage succeeded Thomas Hutchinson, and was the last Royal Governor of Massachusetts.

His military reputation was ruined by the battle of Bunker Hill.

He made his headquarters at first in the " King Hooper " house in Peabody (then Danvers), as elegant a mansion to-day as it then was. He had there with him two companies of troops as a guard. The gathering storm soon compelled Gage and his troops to remove to Boston, where all the forces of the Crown were con- centrated.

In the beleaguered town of Boston, the amiable but sluggish Gage remained till Oct. 10, 1775, when he turned over the command to General Howe, and sailed for England.

(2) On the 7th of March, the King sent a message to Parliament, communicating the dispatches from America, with the story of the destruction of the tea in Boston Harbor, and on the 14th, Lord North brought in the Boston Port Bill, which diverted the commerce of Boston to Salem, but gave power to the King, in council, to restore it upon the return of order and full compensation to the owners for the tea destroyed.

The bill passed both houses and received the King's assent March 31st, and took effect June 1st.

Governor Gage ordered the General Court to convene at Salem on June 1st, by the King's command, till further orders.

The Boston Port Bill worked havoc with the commerce of Boston, but it led up to the idea of the Continental Congress.

(1) Sumner, in his Ilistory of East Boston, styles this affair the Battle of Nod- dle's Island, and the second battle of the Revolution.

The Colonists removed the cattle from Noddle's and Ilog Islands and captured an armed English Schooner at Winnisimet Ferry.

This was the first action of the Revolution in which the Americans used field pieces. The British lost many men killed and wounded. The Americans had no one killed. Israel Putnam was in command of the Americans, and the news, reach- ing Congress upon the day it was electing General Officers, so influenced it that l'utnam was unanimously elected one of the Major Generals.

The troops were ordered toact under a Resolution of the Committee of Safety, passed May 14, 1775 :

" Resolved, as the opinion of this committee, that all the live-stock be taken from Noddle's Island, Hog Island, Snake Island, and from that part of Chelsea near the sea-coast, and be driven back ; and that the execution of this business be com- mitted to the committees of correspondence and selectmen of the towns of Med- ford, Malden, Chelsea, and 1.ynn, and that they be supplied with such a number of men as they shall need from the regiment now at Medford."
