FALL RIVER
Leads America in Manufacture of Cotton Cloth.
Third City in Massachusetts
Fall River has a population of 125,000.
It is located on the Old Colony division of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, 183 miles northeast of New York city, 49 miles south of Boston and 19 miles southeast of Providence. It is the county seat of Bristol county, situated at the mouth of the Taunton river, on Mount Hope Bay, 18 miles inland from the Atlan- tic Ocean, with an unsurpassed harbor, having a 25-foot channel and anchorage.
It is a natural market for a prosperous agricultural district; the home of 50 cotton manufacturing corporations operating 111 mills; employing nearly 35,000 operatives and distributing over $400,000 weekly in wages. Calico printing works and bleachcries located here are unrivaled in the country. It contains the second largest piano factory in New England, a large hat factory, jewelry manufactories, and shipyards. It has become an important fusil oil port, having a 1,500,000 barrel refinery and other storage plants. Numerous smaller factories are to be found here, producing under- wear, caps, and other articles of clothing. Abundant power, both steam and electrical, is available with floor space in buildings for large or small manufacturing enterprises.
The city is well lighted throughout. There are 55 miles of paved streets and 156 miles of accepted streets. A modern motorized fire department of 150 men and a police force of 184 men serve the city.
Fall River has a Public Library costing $200,000 and containing more than 100,000 volumes. It has fifty-five grade schools. High and Technical High schools (with two Junior High schools about to be built) a modern Textile school and twenty-two parochial schools. There are 48 Protestant and 24 Catholic churches; more than 100 lodges, distributed among all fraternal and benevolent societies. There are 58 labor unions, a Merchants' Association, Cotton Manufacturers' Association and a Chamber of Commerce with 1100 members. The city is well provided with hospitals; has five convents, and a Y. M. C. A. (costing $200,000). There are 12 theatres including picture houses. Five parks of good size and some . smaller ones, together with playgrounds, give ample recreation facilities.
Fall River is beautifully surrounded by large bodies of both fresh and salt water, and with its equable climate is proving an ex- ceptionally healthy community.
