THE CONGREGATION of Christ Church has real reason to be proud of its adult choir. Not only does it furnish a fitting background for worship, but it has on occasion rendered some of the great oratorios and cantatas in a most inspiring manner. We owe these choristers a great debt of thanks for the loyalty they have shown by regular attendance at rehearsals, and the very reverent way they have conducted their ministry from the chancel.

THIS IS an important department in the life of our parish. Not only do the members lead in the singing at the Church School services, but they are the potential members of the adult choir in the years ahead. At least half of the present adult choir were former members of this group. The training is excellent for any child who shows promise of a good singing voice, and the familiarity with church music develops reverent and devoted church members.

THE DEVELOPMENT of the Church School has been one of the outstanding achievements of our parish over the years. In this fiftieth year it numbers over three hundred pupils, teachers and officers. The graded system is used throughout the school except in the three kindergarten departments. The school hour begins with a service in the church at 9:30 A.M., with special religious instruction given by the rector. This is followed by regular class work under the supervision of the individual teachers. It is worth noting that our Church School stood sixth among all the parishes in the diocese in the amount given to missions this year through the medium of the Lenten Mite Boxes.

THE JUNIOR GUILD was organized on October 9, 1931. For some time a growing need had been felt for a young woman's organization in the parish, which would afford opportunity for social contacts as well as furnishing interesting ways in which they might show their loyalty to the parish. The first meeting brought together about twenty young women, who proceeded to organize themselves as the Junior Guild under the supervision of the rector. The first officers elected were: President, Mrs. Earl Richwagen; Vice-Presi- dent, Mrs. J. Norman Gledhill; Secretary, Mrs. Ray B. Greene and Treasurer, Mrs. Charles F. Kearney.

It is interesting to note the plans of this organization as it was starting its first season. The following excerpt has been taken from a copy of the Parish Visitor in November, 1931: "A very interesting program is outlined for the winter season, including the making of rugs, lamp shades, table mats, candy. A play, to be given by the members, is in prospect. A health class is planned. There will be other departments of work and entertainment which should make the society very attractive to members and prospective members." From these small beginnings the organization has grown, until today it numbers about one hundred and twenty-five members, with sewing groups, drama groups, service groups and social meetings in various homes during the year to carry on an elaborate program of missionary effort and parish support. The Junior Guild has been responsible for the following tables at the Fair: dolls, plants, novelties, children's finery and grab bag, in addition to the luncheon which is always held on the first day of the Fair. They have come to fill a very important niche in the life of the parish.

THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S FELLOWSHIP has been an important feature in the life of the parish since October 5, 1930. Its first officers were: President, Miss Ina Hanson; Vice-President, Mr. Richard Hodgdon; Secretary, Miss Janet Hodgdon; Treasurer, Mr. Curtis Low. During all its history it has been under the personal supervision of the rector. Each year a course has been given on some phase of church life or Christian living, and the response of the young people has been enthusiastic throughout the fifteen years. Plays and dances have furnished the social side of the group's program. Many members have been sent to Concord Conference at the expense of the organization, and a regular quota is given each year to help support the home parish. The Y.P.F. has ministered to many unfortunate families in the com- munity and surrounding towns. So far this year, they have assisted the Perkins Institute for the Blind by furnishing Christmas gifts of money to several of the students attending there.

THE SERVER'S GROUP was first organized in 1934. Its purpose has been to train young men to assist the rector at the Altar, thereby increasing their devotion to the church and encouraging them to become outstanding Christian examples for the younger members in the congregation. They have been chosen for their character, their loyalty to the church and their dependability. Many of the young men on the fighting fronts today have been members of this group, and we feel sure that the training they received here has stood them in good stead as they faced the stark realism of war.

THE MR. AND MRS. CLUB was proposed as an alternate for the Frederick Pember Men's Club during the war years, when so many of our young men have been away from home. Its purpose is purely social, with meetings held about three times a year. Organized in October, 1943, it has proved an important link in parish life by furnishing the opportunity for social gather- ings of the adult members of our congregation.

OTHER GROUPS

OTHER ORGANIZATIONS which have had a place in the history of Christ Church, but which are not functioning at the present time are: The first Junior Guild, Christ Church Auxiliary, The Girl's Friendly Society and the Frederick Pember Men's Club. One or more of these groups may be recalled to active participation in the parish program at some future date.

BURNING THE MORTGAGE

THE CEREMONY of burning the mortgage was held on Wednesday, May 24, 1944, at 8:00 P.M. Ten charter members were present, and were the guests of the occasion. They were: Mrs. Albert E. Collishaw, Miss Elizabeth Lester, Mrs. John Caulton, Mrs. Elizabeth Mercer, Mrs. Henry Godfrey, Mrs. Edith Knowles, Mr. George Allsebrook, Mr. Fred Lester and Mr. and Mrs. William T. Robinson. Following the impressive service in the church, in the presence of a capacity congregation, a reception for the charter members was held in the parish house. A delicious collation was served, and a most enjoyable social hour followed, quite the best parish get-together within the remem- brance of those present. A sterling silver bowl, suitably inscribed, was pro- cured as a receptacle for the ashes of the burned mortgage, and will be used hereafter as a baptismal bowl. One interesting feature of the service is worth noting. As the rector and rector emeritus ignited the mortgage note, each person in the church laid his or her hand on the shoulder of the person immediately in front, thereby signifying that this ceremony was the result of the cooperative effort of all the members of the parish. Thus they stood and sang the Doxology as the mortgage note was consumed. The following is the service used that evening:

Processional Hymn - "The Church's One Foundation"

"I was glad when they said unto me, we will go into the house of the Lord." "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them and be their God."

work may show forth their thankfulness by making a right use of it, to the glory of Thy Blessed Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Eternal God, mighty in power, Whom the heaven of heavens cannot con- tain, much less the walls of temples made with hands, and Who hast been graciously pleased to promise Thy especial presence wherever two or three of Thy faithful servants shall assemble in Thy Name to offer up their praises and supplications unto Thee; be present, we pray Thee, with us who are here gathered together to prepare the way for the consecration of this place to Thy honor and the benefit of Thy people. Bless the efforts of those who conduct its services, and grant them inspiration from Thee, that they may lead Thy flock as true shepherds, and may be faithful stewards of Thy gospel. Accept, we beseech Thee, this service at our hands, and crown it with such success as may tend to promote Thy glory and the furtherance of our happiness both temporal and spiritual, through Jesus Christ, our blessed Lord and Savior. Amen.

Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that whosoever shall draw near to Thee in this place, to give Thee thanks for the benefits which they have received at Thy hands, to set forth Thy most worthy praise, to confess their sins unto Thee, and to ask such things as are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as for the soul, may do it with such steadfastness of faith, and with such seriousness, affection and devotion of mind, that Thou mayest accept their bounden duty and service, and vouchsafe to give whatever in Thine infinite wisdom Thou shalt see to be most expedient for them. All which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May 15, 1944

Dear Mr. Hall,

It is with great pleasure that I have learned that you plan to burn the mortgage of Christ Church on May 24th. I send this letter of warm congratulations to you, the Wardens and Vestry and the people of the Parish. It has meant fine leadership on your part, splendid cooperation and deep interest on the part of the par- ishioners of the Parish. This is a great step forward and I am rejoicing enthusiastically with you all.

I wish that I could be present on the 24th, but I have to be in New York for a meeting of the Army and Navy Commission. However, I shall be thinking of you and thanking God for your great accomplishment.

Faithfully yours,

Henry K . Stench

THE PAGEANT

A CHARMING sequel to the burning of the mortgage was the pageant, "The Church Unchained," written and directed by Mrs. Helena Beale, with un- usually attractive scenery constructed by her husband Mr. Charles Beale.

The prologue to the pageant depicted a grandmother, granddaughter and little grandson discussing the service of the burning of the mortgage. At the close of the conversation, the granddaughter disclosed that she had had a dream in which she saw a beautiful woman, her hands and feet bound, seated in the courtyard of a church. The woman personified Mother Church, and she was bowed with the heavy bonds of her debts. In the dream, the girl seemed to see various church groups come forward with gifts which were presented at the feet of Mother Church, and in each case a bond was loosened and a candle lighted.

As each group came forward, three devils, "fear, doubt and uncertainty" tried to harass them, but the devils were driven back by two guardian angels. At the close of the pageant, when Mother Church was freed from her bondage, a group of little angels appeared, the devils slunk away to their den, and Mother Church raised her hands in blessing.

This tableau was held, while the rector and rector emeritus re-enacted the burning of the mortgage as the congregation sang the Doxology.

POSTSCRIPT

THUS we bring to a close this brief story of the first half- century in the life of Christ Church. It has been an honor- able story and a happy one. It tells of foundations well laid and devoted service given. But more important than these is the fact that her present vigor and the foresight of her members promise greater achievements in the years that lie ahead; for Christ Church is still a young church, with all the energy of her youth, and with her brightest prospects yet before her. May God give her grace to guard her heritage well, and use it as an inspiration for accomplish- ing greater things in His Name.

THE SENTENCE OF CONSECRATION

In the Name of God, Amen.

WHEREAS the Rector, Church-wardens and Vestrymen of Christ Church in Needham, and the State of Massachusetts, have by an instrument this day presented to me, appointed and devoted a house of Public Worship erected by them in said Needham to the worship and service of Almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, according to the provisions of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, in its ministry, doctrines, liturgy, rites, and usages; and by a congregation in communion with said church, and in union with the convention thereof in the Diocese of Massachusetts.

And whereas the same Rector, Church-wardens and Vestrymen, have by the same instrument, requested me to take their said house of worship under my spiritual jurisdiction as ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts, and that of my successors in office, and to consecrate it by the name of Christ Church, and thereby separate it from all unhallowed, worldly, and common uses, and solemnly dedicate it to the holy purposes above mentioned:

Now therefore know all men by these presents, that I Henry Knox Sherrill D.D. by the Grace of God, ninth Bishop of Massachusetts, acting under the protection of Almighty God, have on this fifth day of November being the twenty-second Sunday after Trinity in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty-four taken the above mentioned House of Worship under my spiritual jurisdiction as Bishop aforesaid, and that of my successors in office; and in the presence of divers of the clergy, and a public congregation therein assembled, and according to the form prescribed by the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, have CONSE- CRATED the same by the name of Christ Church.

And I do hereby pronounce and declare that the said Christ Church is CONSECRATED accordingly, and thereby separated henceforth from all unhallowed, worldly, and common uses, and dedicated to the worship and service of Almighty God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, for reading and preaching His Holy Word, for celebrating His holy Sacraments, for offer- ing to His glorious Majesty the Sacrifices of Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving, for blessing His people in His Name, and for the performance of all other Holy Offices, agreeably to the terms of the covenant of grace and salvation in Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and according to the provisions of the

55 4580

Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, in its ministry, doctrines, liturgy, rites and usages.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my seal and signature in Boston on the day and in the year above written, and in the fifteenth year of my Consecration.

HENRY KNOX SHERRILL Bishop of Massachusetts
