Joseph Twitchel, or Tuchel, the common ancestor of the race in this country, was probably from Dorsetshire, adjacent to Devonshire, as early as 1633, and perhaps 1630. IIe settled at Dorchester; and, being recognized as a member of some chh., was admitted to the free- man's oath May 14, 1631, and had land assigned him Feb. 18, 1635-6. On 8 (1) 1641, he or his son Joseph was admitted to the chh. of D.
1. 1. Joseph,' who died at Dorchester 13 (7) 1657, pr. um.
2. 11. Benj.,' who removed from D. ab. 1663 to Bogistow, having, it is presumed, bought 100 acres of Kaine's grant, and built his house ab. 80 rods S. W. of Death's Bridge., in Sherborn, where
* " Alvered de Ispannia hat 1. mans, que vocatur Alferdintona hic @ 1 mans. que vocatur Tuchel," and in another place it is called " Tuichel," and in another, " Terra Alveredi Ispaniensis in Deven- csira."-Doomday Book.
Alvered must have been a great favorite with the Conqueror, for few had so much land assigned them. Of the 26 mansiones, (manors or estates,) 23 were in Somersetshire. Alvered de Breton, alias " de Merleberg." a Norman, and perhaps his son, had several ditto. Allotments were also made to three of his daughters, and his blood has doubtless gone extensively into the noble families of England, if it has not becu upon the throne.
+ As surnames were not introduced until long after the conquest, the occurrence of Touchet in the Chronicles of Normandy, and on the dubious Battle Abbey Roll, have little or no weight against the prova- bility above suggested. Lord Andley derives his surname from Ormus Touchet, a personage of a later age.

Here he is supposed either to have died, or, in 1675-6, to have been killed by Indians, and his house burnt. Immediately afterwards, his family reappeared at Sherborn, and s. in the vicinity of his former home. Joseph took possession of the 100 acres, which was afterwards sold to Samuel Morse, of Med. field. Benj.2 had by wf. Mary-
