The Directory Library-An Unique Service
The Association of North American Directory Publishers maintains over 300 Directory Libraries in the larger cities of North America, and aside from the many, many uses made of the directories for personal reference these collections are splendid advertising for the various cities and their industries.
This has become an international service which is so unique that it is constantly being commented upon, and although the expense of exchanging directories between publishers is very great the service is so much appreciated that the work is being carried on more and more extensively.
Early History of Directories
Many centuries ago, long before we had Directories, it was the custom of persons having goods for sale to stand on the street corner and tell the passers-by of their wares. The stranger looking for his friend searched from house-to-house or in the market place, crying his question until some one answered.
Next came the Town Crier who, hired to seek and give information, wandered through the highways and byways ringing his bell and crying "Hear ye, Hear ye" until his mission was completed. With the growth of population this picturesque service became unsatis- factory and expensive and was abandoned for information regarding the community, gathered at stated intervals. And then, with the in- vention of the printing press, came the publishing of this important datal
First Directories
The very first Directory issued in book form was published in 1595-in London, England-during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. This interesting book, containing only the names of such "Gentlemen" as the publishers thought fit, was entitled: "The names of all such Gentlemen of Accompts as were residing within the City of London."
Just 137 years later (1732) the first publication bearing the name "Directory" was issued in London. One of the chief difficulties of Directory publishing at this early period was the lack of house numbers, and because of this many houses were known as "The Black Bear," "The White Swan," "The Six Golden Lights"-or on such and such a road, next door to the goldsmith's. House numbering did not become general until 1800. Difficulties had to be overcome gradually until the present system of street and house numbering was evolved.
The Directory publishers have always been of great assistance to the authorities in the house numbering problem.
First American Directory
Benjamin Franklin's name appears in the first American Directory, which was published in Philadelphia in 1785. This book con- tained 85 pages with 3570 names.
Only four of the New York Directories of 1786 are now in existence, and that they are valued highly because of their historical value is shown by the fact that one sold at auction a few years ago for $2,400.00. In this edition appear the names of Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, side by side. Little did the compiler dream that these two were to meet in deadly combat across from New York, under the shadows of the beautiful Palisades, on the Jersey side of the Hudson river.
Three years after the publication of the first New York Directory, Boston came out with her "First Edition," which was in pamphlet form and contained 56 pages. People were not as democratic in those days as they are now, and instead of the names being listed alpha- betically the compilers attempted to give the names in accordance to rank and standing in the community. In this little booklet we find the name of our old friend Paul Revere (goldsmith), 50 Cornhill St. Heading his advertisement was a Liberty Bell-the same dashing spirit that led him to be the first to warn "the country people to be up and to arm," made him one of the first to advertise in the City Directory.
The Directory-A Business Asset
The City Directory is a permanent history of the city and the community for which it is compiled. Every page within its covers is alive with the names of men and their work, telling more about the community than is published in any other form. Directories set forth the characteristics and advantages of the city as a place of residence, as an educational center, as a business location or as an industrial site, while the classified lists are the world's greatest guides for buyers. There are millions of dollars' worth of goods bought and sold from the classified sections of city directories.
Today no business office is complete without its City Directory, and no city is complete without a Directory Library. While most folks think of the City Directory as a place to find names and addresses, only, there really is such a vast fund of knowledge of importance to the business man and to the individual that great Libraries of Directories are springing into existence all over the North American con- tinent. Thousands of people are consulting these Libraries daily, and that they are supplying an ever-increasing demand is shown by the enthusiastic letters (excerpts from which you will find within this folder) received from various Directory Libraries the country over.
Association of Directory Publishers
It has been 137 years since the publishing of the first directory in the United States and the growth of population and of business in North America has been so rapid that only by co-operation and close association have the directory publishers been able to "keep up" in their directory service to the public. The Association of North American Directory publishers was organized in 1898 for the pur- pose of "Improving the Directory Business by Exchanging Ideas". Today it is composed of the leading directory publishers of North America.
Collections of Directories
The largest collection of Directories in the world is in the British Museum in London, England; the second largest is in the Library at Washington, D. C. Many banks and other business houses pride themselves on having libraries of their own City Directories for thirty or forty years back, and while the Directory Library of various City Directories, Gazetteers, etc., is of more or less recent origin, these various centers are already priding themselves on the information they have at their disposal.
Inside this folder you will find the addresses of the Directory Libraries maintained by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
