The "Trues" left us in the spring of 1938. A farewell reception was given for them on May 26. On behalf of the parishioners, Miss Hazel O. Cormey presented them a substantial sum of money, as a token of the high esteem held for them.
Our loss in losing the Rev. True, was borne with the same good faith which often sees many Methodists lose their well-liked ministers and are powerless to prevent it.
Rev. True was followed by Rev. Fred E. Fox, a student at Boston University, who was a native of Indiana.
In 1938 we repaired the two chimneys on the church, which had been orig- inally built in 1858. They were taken down as far as the attic floor, and then rebuilt up into one large chimney. We were able to pay for this and also cancel the old mortgage of 1929, as we received the sum of one thousand dollars from the estate of Mrs. Newton P. Frye.
Our church prospered under the guiding hand of Mr. Fox. Mrs. Fox, a former music teacher in the Indiana public schools, took over the directing of the choir in 1939.
On April 30, 1939 a son, James was born to Rev. and Mrs. Fox. "Jimmie" was a welcome addition to the Parsonage family.
In May of 1939, our church became legally known as the First Methodist Church of North Andover, dropping the "Episcopal" from its name after using it for 94 years. This was done in accordance with the Union of the three branches of Methodism in the United States.
With the unification of the three churches, two of our church societies had to be reorganized. The Ladies' Aid Society and the Philathea Class were com- bined into the Women's Society of Christian Service. This took place on Mon- day, October 7, 1940. There were 23 charter members. They were:
Mrs. Fred E. Fox
Mrs. Clayton Bolderson
Mrs. Ernest Stewart
Mrs. Harry Dobson
Mrs. George Rand
Mrs. F. Leroy Champion
Mrs. Henry Jackson
Mrs. Raymond Wilcox
Mrs. Harold Tyning Mrs. Frank Manchester, Jr.
Mrs. Clarence Hayes
Mrs. Henry Black

The Epworth League, which was organized October 8, 1890, was dissolved and a new organization formed, which is now the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
The year 1941 will long be remembered in the history of our society. It was the year that the most extensive alterations were made to our building since the time it was raised and made into a two story structure.
11
HISTORY OF FIRST METHODIST CHURCH
At the close of the March meeting of that year of the Official Board, the Trustees were asked to adjourn to the auditorium. It was then announced that our church society was in receipt of a large gift, which was to be used for a new pipe organ and chancel. This was very welcome news, for it had long been the desire of the Trustees and the parish to secure a new organ.
So that the work could be started early, we concluded our Sunday services on May 25. During the months of July and August, the usual Union Services with the Trinitarian Congregational Church were held at the latter church. Our minister, choir, and ushers having charge of the services during August.
On Sunday, October 5, 1941 the reopening services were held, with stand- ing room only.
Many changes were made in the original plans for a pipe organ and new chancel. It was decided not to put in an expensive organ and new chancel in an old out-of-date interior. So instead, a less expensive all electric Everett Orgatrone was installed with a sound box. This enabled the money donated, to be used on other needed improvements. The whole interior was changed leav- ing nothing of the old setting. A complete new divided chancel, with pulpit and lectern were installed. The chancel was fitted out with new furniture, and a new floor was laid of black walnut parquetry. The furnishings include purple kneeling cushions at the new communion rail. A new Baptismal Font with panelled sides and removable mahogany cover with a pewter basin, stands on the right of the pulpit on the main floor. On the wall in back of and above the communion table, is a dossal composed of green and gold damask with purple velvet border strips and a purple valance. Gold galloon is used for trim- ming and the fringes are of green and purple, and of gold. The new com- munion table which is flanked by two reed bottom maple chairs, has a gold leaf cross with candle sticks to match. Four new large collection plates and two small ones, with a new hymnal for the pulpit, and 90 new hymnals were bought at this time.
The old pews were removed and new ones put in, with a center aisle and one on each side of the wall, instead of the two old original ones. Pews were also placed in a remodelled section at the rear of the sanctuary, to again give us a small balcony. All of the pews were finished with white backs, and ma- hogany seats, rails, and hymnal racks.
New windows with an arched top were installed. The large three windows at the front of the building were replaced with a beautiful Palladian Window. Venetian blinds were provided for all of the windows in the Sanctuary and the new minister's room.
This is the second time that new windows have been put into the sanctuary. When the building was raised in the fall of 1882, the windows and frames were taken out and put into the new Sunday School room. New double pointed windows, with red stained glass were put into the sanctuary at that time. This red glass was changed to green glass during the 1917 alterations, which served until the arched top windows were installed.
Eight new chandeliers of Old Flemish brass were installed. The floor was refinished and the aisles covered with a gray inlaid hard rubber material. A new Celotex ceiling was put up and all of the sanctuary painted. The Sunday School room was redecorated and two center columns were removed and four others replaced with steel laly columns and steel beams. Thus originated the "hump" in the middle of the sanctuary floor.

HISTORY OF FIRST METHODIST CHURCH
The Dedicatory service was held on Sunday, October 26th, with Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam delivering the sermon. Dr. Laurence W. C. Emig, Superin- tendent of the Lynn District, offered prayer and read the scripture lesson.
The sanctuary was filled to capacity, with an overflow audience listening to the service by radio in the Sunday School room.
Rev. Fox read a congratulatory letter from Rev. Clinton W. Carvell, written in behalf of the Trinitarian Congregational Church.
At Conference time in May of 1942, Rev. Fred E. Fox was asked to re- turn for his fifth year. However, he resigned to accept a call to a church in the North Indiana Methodist Conference. His four year stay in North An- dover had seen a complete change in our society, with the nation-wide unifica- tion of Methodism and the remodelling of the church edifice.
Rev. Fox was succeeded by Rev. Harris E. Heverly, who came to us from Newburyport.
During the summer of 1943, the Parsonage was painted by the men of the parish, under the leadership of Rev. Heverly, who did his share of the work.
It was during Rev. Heverly's pastorate that the United States entered into the conflict which is known as World War II. He organized a service com- mittee to care for the needs of the young men and women from our parish who went into the service of their country. The names on our Honor Roll for World War II are:

We have two gold stars on our service flag. They are for William H. Munro who died July 3, 1944, and for William B. Sipsey who died May 16, 1945.
At the Conference of May 1944, Rev. Heverly resigned to accept the call of the large Methodist Church in Winchester. The people of our church had not expected this change, so again we had to lose another good pastor.
The last year of the century of Methodism in North Andover, has to do largely with the work of our present pastor, Rev. Lewis B. Carpenter. He is an up-state New Yorker, who has worked long and hard for us. All of the planning for this anniversary has been done by him. At a later date I will record the fruits of his labors. It is his wish that nothing is mentioned about his pastorate in our societies' history at this time.
No history of our parish would be complete without the list of our 47 min- isters.

We hope that the next hundred years will see a much shorter list, so that at the two hundredth anniversary, the historian will be able to report a list of only 50 ministers.
