MANUFACTURES

THE value of the water-power afforded by the Ware River was recognized at an early date, the river dropping seventy feet in less than a quarter of a mile; but with the excep- tion of saw and grist mills already described, there was no utilization of the power until after 1813, when Alpheus Demond and Col. Thomas Denny purchased the Magoon property, consisting of some 400 acres of land, for $4,500. They built a new dam above where the lower stone bridge now stands, repaired the saw-mill and grist-mill, started two carding machines, and a small plant for making machin- ery. The machine shop stood just above the bridge on the north side of the river. The carders were intended to supply merely a local need. Colonel Denny died in 1814, and the business was not pushed.

Early in the year 1821 the entire property was purchased by Holbrook and Dexter of Boston for $15,000, and a com- pany formed in which a number of wealthy and influential Boston men were interested. In 1823 the Ware Manufac- turing Co. was incorporated with a capital of $600,000. Gardner Green was president. John Tappan, Samuel Hub- bard and S. V. S. Wilder were among the directors. The company at once erected a woollen mill on the south side of the river, a part of which is still standing, by far the oldest of the factory buildings in Ware.

In 1824 the Company branched out and built a large mill, 271 feet long, a little farther up the river, taking its power from the upper falls. Great expense was involved in mak- ing the water-power available, as a large amount of ex- cavation through the solid rock was necessary, and the Company failed within a few years.

HISTORY OF WARE

by Jeremiah Spofford there are several notes of interest. The Ware River is spoken of as "a large and powerful stream." The manufacturing industry is described as fol- lows: "An immense change has been made at the falls in the town within a short period, by which a desolate wilder- ness has been changed into a populous village. ... The Ware Manufacturing Co. employs 450 hands, ... consumes 850 bales of cotton and 300 bales of sheep's wool annually, from which are made 850,000 yds. of cotton cloth, and 300,000 yds. of coarse woollens, mostly adapted to the use of the negroes of the southern states and West Indies. . .. The population of the village exceeds 1,400, being more than that of the whole town of the last census."

In 1829 the Hampshire Manufacturing Co. was incor- porated with a capital of $400,000, purchasing the entire property of the old company. The plant was somewhat enlarged in 1836. In 1837 however came the great finan- cial crash, and the Company went under.1

Barber's Historical Collections, published in 1839, give the following statistics of the Hampshire Manufacturing Co. for the year 1837. Two cotton mills, with 6,544 spindles. Raw cotton consumed, 516,000 pounds. Cloth manufac- tured, 1,450,000 yards, valued at $160,000. Males employed, 62; females, 200. Two woollen mills with eleven sets of machinery. Wool consumed, 276,000 pounds, from which 230,000 yards of cloth were made, valued at $280,000. In the woollen mills were employed 77 males and 80 females.

In 1839 the Otis Company 2 was organized and purchased that part of the property of the Hampshire Manufacturing Co. which lies north of the river. The large one-story mill built by the Ware Co. in 1824 was burned in 1845, where- upon the Company erected on the same site the large five- story brick mill known as No. 2. At the same time the stone mill was erected of stone quarried on the Coney farm in the edge of West Brookfield. As Gilbert and Stevens at about the same time added largely to their plant, manu-

1 Among the assets of the company were a number of pews in the East Meeting- house, evidently representing the value of the land on which the church stands. William Hyde bought the whole lot in 1839 for $750.

: One of the original incorporators was James W. Otis, from whom the com- pany derived its name.

facturing on a large scale in Ware dates from this period. Then it was that a radical change came over the population of our town. Hitherto the comparatively small factories had been manned almost wholly by people of native Ameri- can birth, gathered from the outlying farms. Now began an influx of foreigners in such numbers that a healthy assimilation of them was impossible, coming as they did with different social and political ideas. As a result the moral and social condition inevitably suffered. There is much evidence to show that the town was at a low ebb morally during the years following immediately after 1850. At the town meeting in March, 1851, it was deemed neces- sary to appoint a Committee of Law and Order of twenty members. The list includes the names of the foremost citizens of the town. At the annual meeting the following year the selectmen were instructed not to license immoral exhibitions, "nor let the use of the town hall on Saturday or Sunday evenings for any purposes that are contrary to law." William C. Greene, Esq., settled in town in 1853, and acted as local magistrate for a number of years, dealing out jus- tice in what he called "an unique town." He says that at that time the foreigners were coming in, holding the idea that they were entering a land of absolute freedom "in mind, matter, body, soul, spirit, inclination and appe- tite." It is certainly to the credit of the town that read- justment on a high plane was speedily effected.
